Ask the UXperts: Empathy & Active Listening — with Indi Young

Conventional product development focuses on solutions, while empathy is a mindset that focuses on people. It helps us to understand how people think – to see things from their perspective. Harnessing empathy helps us to make better decisions, improve strategies, and collaborate successfully.

Indi Young is an independent consultant who knows more than most when it comes to empathy. She helps teams with person-focused research, product strategy, and experience flow.

Indi has been a trailblazer of experience design since the dot-com boom, using her roots in computer science to help people adopt a neutral, well-considered mindset. In 2001 she was a founder of Adaptive Path, the San Francisco experience design agency. In 2008, her book Mental Models, introducing mental model diagrams, was published. Her second book, Practical Empathy, was released in 2015. She writes articles, conducts workshops and webinars, and speaks about the importance of pushing the boundaries of your perspective.

Join us in our next Ask the UXperts session to chat with Indi about why empathy and active listening are such a key part of great design. The sessions run for approximately an hour and best of all, they don’t cost a cent. They are text based so there is no audio or video, but a full transcript will be posted up on here in the days following the session.
