A New Study Explains Why Humans Think AI Machines Acting as Humans is Creepy and Scary

A study by Karl F. MacDorman, associate dean of academic affairs and associate professor at the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering in Indiana, and published in a journal called Computers in Human Behavior: Artificial Humans talks about how many artificial intelligence models are slowly showing capabilities that resemble humans. MacDorman says that many people thinking about non-living things showing human behaviors seems scary. With the increase of many AI models like ChatGPT, it was about time to investigate the topic of robots acting like humans.

Many large language models are developed in a way that they respond in a way that is similar to having conversations with humans. Anyone can mistake talking with AI chatbots as talking with humans because of the close similarity in their talking styles. In 2012, some professors started to investigate a term called “uncanny valley”. It refers to having similarity between humans and robots that it is difficult to differentiate between them. When MacDorman referenced the study for his own research, he thought that whether mind perception could be the reason for this similarity.

He said that the researchers drew out conclusions based on what they were trying to seek. As uncanny valley talks about how much humans and AI beings are alike, many humans feel uneasy and scared. Most of the time what we are feeling is based on what we perceive. So the experiment could be about the feelings of the researchers and not about the real thing.

The first point of MacDorman’s study was to separate mind perception from the experiment. He said that manipulation of mind perception is to know whether the AI beings can feel or perceive anything or not. The best way to know this is be re-analyzing previous experiments. He said that when AI machines were able to be described as feeling things or sensing something, it wasn’t as scary when they were physically present in the form of virtual reality or robots as compared to when they were absent.

Karl F. MacDorman said in his study that uncanny valley is more linked with stimulus-driven perceptual process and than mind perception. The study explains in detail the perception of humans about robots. Uncanny valley isn’t about having conscious experience with robotic machines, rather it is about thinking that a machine has a human-like mind. It makes all of the experience creepier.

Survey Shows 39% of the Americans have Stopped Using Social Media Just to Avoid AI Fakery

Presidential elections are fast approaching in America but many of the US citizens are confused about whether what they are seeing on the internet is real or if it is AI generated. Adobe did a survey of 6,000 people from four different countries and asked them about their views on AI spreading fake information on the internet and how AI deep fakes are becoming a bigger problem with each passing day. The results of the survey showed that many people are very concerned about AI deep fakes that now they have stopped using social media apps to avoid this issue.

Many social media platforms and government related agencies are trying to stop the spread of AI deep fakes, especially when it is concerned with content related to politics and elections. Adobe launched its own scorecard called Content Authenticity Initiative to create a label that can tell that the content users are seeing on social media is authentic and not AI generated.

From the survey, Adobe found out that seven in ten US citizens said that it is hard to identify AI from human content on social media. Nearly half of of the US citizens said that they have seen misinformation posted on social media by someone they knew. Respondents of the survey also said that they think videos and images are easily more AI generatable than text and audio. Four in five respondents also suggested that candidates who are taking part in political campaigns should not use any form of AI in their campaigns. The Americans who have stopped using social media just to not get fooled by AI are 39% of the total people surveyed.

EVP, general counsel, and chief trust officer at Adobe, Dana Rao, says that the results of this survey show that it is time that social media sites need to put more effort into verifying what’s real and what’s AI generated. The users should also be aware of dangers of deep fakes and what they should do to identify and avoid them on the internet.

The Impact Of The US TikTok Ban: New Study Proves Less Than Half Of The Nation Supports The Decision

The cat is out of the bag and it’s no surprise that the US Congress just voted in favor of a complete TikTok ban (or force selling of the platform) across the country.

President Biden signed the bill into law and has given the social media giant nine months to separate itself from Chinese parent firm ByteDance or face a complete shutdown in the American market.

While the company promises to fight back against the accusations hurled in its direction by US lawmakers, new studies are glaring into the mindset of Americans and how they feel about the country-wide ban.

Many critics are referring to the decision as a major one in terms of digital privacy as well as international relations. But interestingly, less than half of the country shows support for the government on this front.

They feel it’s controversial for obvious reasons with close to 42% being in agreement while the rest showing disapproval.

The study in question featured 2,000 American adults who took part in Talker Research’s latest initiative to find out what American mindsets were feeling about the bold decision. 31% of individuals felt they did not care while 23% showed great opposition.

What was interesting is how 42% of Gen Z and close to 35% of millennials generated a response in the app’s favor and spoke about using it regularly. But 36% voiced support for this ban.

The study was rolled out actually before the American President signed the bill into law on official grounds and warned that the only way out was to sell off algorithms elsewhere instead of turning back to Chinese roots.

25% feel they would be affected by the decision while 45% said it would have no effect on their daily lives. Meanwhile, 39% added how barring this app across America can be so uneventful for them while more than 50% reported about their kids using the platform.

21% always worry about the popular platform impacting their young kids’ minds and that was something they wish they didn’t have to deal with. The biggest concern on this front had to do with rolling out the most inappropriate content that was disturbing for underage viewers and could impact their minds.

Meanwhile, close to 45% of Americans felt their data privacy would be at stake while others had an issue with matters like cyberbullying. To generate concerns about what kids were posting did not seem to be a major concern here as only one in five parents spoke out about that.

With that being said, plenty of research is available that proves how TikTok is worrisome for Americans who feel strongly about it being the major source of misinformation online.

Other than top security issues, other researchers have delineated more about the app and its misinformation woes. Moreover, one study went as far as to reveal how nearly 50% of the content linked to health had fake data. Influencers were giving out incorrect health advice instead of doctors and that again was worrisome.

Playing with health was not something any user would wish to do at any cost and TikTok not doing enough to stop this act had users concerned despite them being avid fans of the leading digital app.

While plenty of factual data of great quality is seen online today including the likes of TikTok, it’s not easy to decipher what’s right from wrong because it’s portrayed so convincingly. Meanwhile, another study also shed light on how people were concerned about their kids meeting strangers through TikTok. While another 29% had the fear it would reduce attention spans and impact mental health.

Gen-Z Defies Stereotypes, Championing Change Despite Criticism of Laziness

Gen-Z have never been regarded as a strong and activist generation by the people of the older generation. People born between 1997 to 2012 have often been called lazy, too soft, entitled and too soft but are never praised for what they stand for. The young people of this age are learned, educated and vocal about many issues around the world and they do their best to spread awareness about certain topics.

Gen-Z are not people who are waiting for a change to happen in this world, they are demanding it – and fiercely to say the least. Gen-Z are the reason for launching many movements these past six months that have left status quo elites uncomfortable and bothered in their comfortable lives. The decades of unbalanced use of power and authority is going to end soon because this young generation is becoming powerful enough to demand human rights and is quite enthusiastic to make the world a peaceful place.

America is seeing a ‘youthquake’ with university students raising their voices in the forms of anti-war protests and the university administrations have nothing to do other than suppress these voices with police intervention. After the incident involving Hamas on October 7th, many university students have started their campaigns for violence on innocent civilians. These campaigns have resulted in suspensions and walkouts of many students but they are still resilient and are protesting ahead of democratic primary elections.

These protests and campaigns aren’t just limited to elite universities like Columbia and Berkeley, as many other university students are actively taking part in them. One third of Gen-Z from these universities say that they are entirely or mostly with Palestinians while only 10% of the adults think so. 36% of the adults believe that President Biden is totally favoring the Israelis and this is not good for him as most of his voters are younger Americans.

The ongoing Palestine-Israel conflict shows us how Gen-Z are with equity, justice, inclusion and human rights. An Edelman survey shows that 70% of the Gen-Z are active on social media and participate in political causes. This makes them more digital fluent and they can easily distinguish facts from lies which helps them educate their fellows and advocate for change. Data also shows that Gen-Z is the generation which spends the least amount of time and spends at least 10.5 hours a week on TikTok and 6.9 hours a week on YouTube. The legislation to ban TikTok in America was also fueled after the outbreak of war and this angered the younger generation.

If you talk to an adult about the younger generation, they would probably complain that Gen-Z are always stuck to their screen and aren’t aware of real world issues. But when you talk to a person under 30, you will probably find out that they are people who are most in-touch with what’s happening around the world and are mostly aware of what’s right and what’s wrong. They are the ones raising voices for climate change, gender diversity and now Palestine, Westbank and Gaza. They are a hope for a bright future.

Meta Salary Breakdown In The Spotlight, How Much Are Median Employees Really Paid?

On paper, you’ll see tech giant Meta’s CEO pop up as one of the firm’s lowest-paid workers. And many were shocked to see the figure get listed at just $1 last year.

But behind that awfully modest value lies a massive amount of compensation entailing a whopping $24 million figure (or $24,399,968 precisely) that arises under the ‘other compensation’ category as per the tech giant’s most recently published proxy filing.

And while the CEO's salary usually tends to be highlighted for obvious reasons, it's the median employee compensation at the company that is now in the spotlight, as Meta provides them with a staggering figure of $379K (or $379,050 to be exact). And just a mere reflection of how much it values giving the workforce rewards and staying committed on that front.

In stark comparison to what’s seen for Zuckerberg and his earnings, what does the average employee’s salary at Meta comprise? It’s said to be in the $35k and can go as far as the $120k figure as delineated by Indeed recently. This really does underscore a massive discrepancy when we look at the industry.

However, the majority of the compensation package arising from Mark Zuckerberg is not the usual salary or bonus that is allocated to cover security costs. Meta proved how the CEO’s personal services like security allowance rose by 40% from $10 million a few years back to a staggering $14 million just last year.

It’s a disclosure that arises against the firm’s decision to cut down on the figure of employees working today as it embraced a firing spree that had close to 11k people terminated. And that figure is equal to 13% of the overall workforce.

Despite such massive scrutiny regarding the decision that many did not appreciate when you look at how much the CEO gets for private security, the tech giant continued to prevail with its decision and even opted to reduce security expenses arising from the CEO’s front.

Back in 2022, Mark Zuckerberg’s expenses raised eyebrows when his travel and security costs were calculated. It was a luxury beyond words and plenty of personal travel trips happened to be included.

In comparison, we saw the company’s year of efficiency last year put forward $9 million for just security with $1 million just for private fleets for flying.
But Meta was forced to provide a defense statement to justify the act that comprised of threats aimed at Zuckerberg directly who was after all the brand’s leading face. And who better to turn to than him when setting the right example right?

The challenges that Meta has been facing in terms of criticism from across the board are very interesting since the profile is very public for Zuckerberg. And the fact that his name is taken again and again for sticking to the $1 salary club with plenty of others is proof of how people are not happy.

Meta has had a robust year financially and it is certainly going strong with quarterly earnings report noting down nothing but success. The successful turnaround is delineated to be more related to enhanced operation costs and a reduction of the employee count than anything else. Did we mention how the CEO’s network also ended up rising to a staggering $176 billion this month?

The massive rise is proof of how his leading position as one of the richest individuals from around the globe continues to solidify, going past tech billionaire Elon Musk to get the number three on rankings released by Bloomberg.

These recent compensation figures that were disclosed shed light on not only the CEO’s unconventional salary but also on the careful dynamics regarding exclusive compensation and security costs seen across the tech world.

Remember, Meta is slowly but surely navigating many challenges and chances it gets but with that being said, what Zuckerberg gets is a major matter of concern and scrutiny for many as discussions related to wealth inequality continue to take center stage today.

We would love to know what you think on this front and whether someone whose salary is listed as $1 is correct when hidden personal expenditures are mind-blowingly huge.

A New Study Shows that Plastic Waste from Beverages and Food is a Big Contributor in Plastic Pollution

A study published in journal Science Advances analyzed the data that was taken from different litter surveys between 2018 to 2022 in 84 countries. These data sets were collected from different volunteers who picked 1.8 million plastic from parks, beaches, roads and other public places around the world. By knowing this data, researchers did a rough estimation about how much plastic waste is being produced by plastic companies all over the world.

According to the findings, Coca-Cola Company is the biggest source of plastic waste and makes 11% of all the plastic waste in the world. Next comes PepsiCo with 5% plastic waste followed by Nestle and Danone which contributed to 3% each of the total plastic waste. Altria, which is the biggest producer of tobacco, cigarettes and products related to these things produce 2% of the total plastic waste in the world. These big five companies make 24% of the total plastic waste. 56 companies make half of plastic waste which is a concerning world’s litter problem.

When the volunteers were picking plastic waste, most of it didn’t have any brand or company name. The researchers say that this means that the percentage of plastic waste from these big five companies is probably higher than their estimation. The researchers also want relevant authorities to take preventive measures to decrease the plastic waste.

The biggest reason for global plastic waste is food and beverages. The single-use packaging is one of the biggest reasons for plastic pollution. The candy wrapper or plastic bottle you throw away immediately contributes to more plastic pollution than a detergent bottle being used for months before getting thrown away.

The researchers said that the solution to this plastic pollution is to decrease the plastic production. Brand managers and policy makers should do something to reduce plastic pollution that is very harmful for the environment.

Report by Pew Research Shows that 73% of US Citizens are in Favor or Press Freedom

Pew Research conducted a new study about the thoughts of US citizens on freedom of press. 73% of the Americans think freedom of press is extremely important while 18% say that it is somewhat important. 78% of Asians and White US citizens are in favor of freedom of press while 60% Black Americans and 61% of Hispanics have similar thoughts.

Pew says that the thoughts of Americans about freedom of press are not varied with the political party they support. What makes people differ from their opinion about freedom of press is educational income levels. The Americans with higher educational and salary levels are more likely to support freedom of press as compared to those who are less educational and have low income levels.

Even with the positivity of Americans about freedom of press, only 33% believe that the media is completely free to report whatever it likes while 46% are somewhat in favor of the media reporting anything. 18% of Americans are not very sure if the media can report anything it likes or not. What’s interesting is that 84% of the US media and news outlets are interested in reporting corporate and finance news while 83% are influenced by governmental and political interests. This diversity of news is influenced by what political party they support. 60% of the Republicans say that financial interests are influencing media while 45% of Democrats say media is influenced by governmental interests. 67% of the Republicans say that their interests affect the press while Democrats(34%) say the same.

38% of the Democrats also say that news outlets are free to report whatever they like as compared to 29% of the Republicans. Republicans are also worried about some restrictions in news outlets(49%). 51% of the Americans say that fake news should always be prevented even if this means restricting press freedom but 46% say that freedom of press should be developed no matter what.

Google Search Ad Costs Rise as Click Growth Slows

Google Search remains the leading platform in paid media, but it is becoming an expensive option as the number of clicks continues to decline. In the first quarter of 2024, spending on search ads in the U.S. increased by 17% compared to the same period last year. However, the growth in clicks has slowed down significantly, with only a 4% increase this year, which is half the rate of the last quarter of 2023.

The cost per click (CPC) has risen by 13% over the past year, a higher increase than the 9% seen in the previous quarter. This increase in CPC is largely due to higher costs in both standard and PMax shopping ads. Specifically, PMax campaigns, which are designed to optimize ad performance, showed improved metrics over standard shopping campaigns. They had a conversion rate that was only slightly lower but a cost per click that was more favorable.

Retailers have been particularly affected, with a 40-50% rise in CPCs over the past five years. From the first quarter of 2023 to the same quarter in 2024, the median CPC for Google retail search ads went up by about 20%. This trend is problematic for advertisers as increasing costs and decreasing clicks reduce the effectiveness and affordability of their ad campaigns.

During the peak shopping season of the fourth quarter of 2023, 91% of retailers running shopping ads on Google were using PMax campaigns. This number remained stable into the first quarter of 2024, showing that PMax continues to be a key strategy for most advertisers on Google.

The report on these trends, produced by Tinuiti, uses data from advertising programs it manages. This data reflects consistent advertising strategies and provides insights into the same-client growth but does not necessarily represent the performance across all advertisers or platforms. This rising trend in CPC amidst falling clicks indicates challenging times ahead for advertisers who rely heavily on Google's platform.

TikTok Ban Threatens Jobs, California Senator Cautions

President Joe Biden recently signed a law that may lead to a ban on TikTok or force its sale. This decision followed quick approvals by both the House of Representatives and the Senate. The popular app, owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, is now facing legal battles.

California Senator Laphonza Butler, who supported the legislation, has raised concerns about the impact of such a ban on American jobs.

She highlighted that around 8,000 people work for TikTok in the United States, primarily in California and New York. The potential ban or forced sale of TikTok could put these jobs and the workers' families at risk.

Butler urged the Biden administration to think about the American workers who might be affected by these decisions. She pointed out the significant role these employees have played in TikTok's success and emphasized the need for a balanced approach that considers labor and economic impacts alongside national security concerns.

Historically, attempts to ban TikTok have faced legal hurdles. Former President Donald Trump's executive order to ban the app was blocked by the courts in 2020. Similarly, a state ban in Montana was overturned in November 2023 after a judge ruled it unconstitutional.

Support for TikTok also comes from civil rights groups like the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). They argue that banning TikTok could suppress free speech and limit Americans' access to international media and information. Activists stress that such a move would infringe on the First Amendment rights of U.S. citizens.

The debate continues as the administration weighs the risks against potential impacts on thousands of American workers and their families. Google to Fix Privacy Issues on Android TVs

Google has started updating Android TV software to prevent a privacy issue that could let people access the owner's emails. Android TV’s, which come with the Android operating system, usually keep the user logged into their Google account.

This setup makes it easy to use apps from the Play Store without having to log in every time. However, it also meant that anyone with access to the TV could potentially view emails and other personal information.

The problem was highlighted when YouTuber Cameron Gray demonstrated how to install the Chrome browser on an Android TV. Although Chrome is not officially available on Android TVs, Gray showed that it could be installed by downloading it from an online archive using a third-party web browser called TV Bro.

Once installed, it was possible to visit Gmail using Chrome, even though the browser is not designed to be used with TV remotes and requires a keyboard and mouse.

This issue was brought to Google's attention through a video shared by Senator Ron Wyden's office. Initially, Google responded by stating this behavior was expected and did not pose a security threat. However, after further consideration, Google has decided to address the loophole.
A Google spokesperson has mentioned that most devices with the latest Google TV software are already protected against this issue. Google is working on updates for other devices to ensure all are secure.

They also advised users to keep their devices updated to avoid such privacy risks.

For extra safety, Google suggests that users might want to consider setting up a separate "family" Google account for their Android TV. This account could be added as a member of Google Family, allowing access to apps like YouTube TV while ensuring personal viewing preferences and history are kept private. This is a good option for users who are worried about their privacy when others are around.

Amnesty International Highlights Global Disregard for International Law

Amnesty International, a prominent human rights organization, has released its annual report. It warns of a serious breakdown of international law across the world.

The report criticizes the world's most powerful governments, countries and corporate actors for their role in this decline. It states that these entities have created an atmosphere that disregards international rules and values established after World War Two.

The report points out severe violations in regions like Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, Ethiopia, and Myanmar. It blames powerful governments, particularly the US, Russia, and China, for leading this global disregard. These countries are accused of failing to uphold the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, resulting in severe consequences for civilians caught in conflicts.

Amnesty International’s report expresses concern over the actions of Israel and the inaction of its allies. These actions are the root cause behind the significant civilian suffering in Gaza and Palestine.

It notes the US's failure to condemn rights violations by Israel and its use of veto power in the UN Security Council to block a ceasefire resolution in Gaza. Russia's aggressive actions in Ukraine and China's support for military forces in Myanmar and its treatment of the Uyghur minority are also highlighted as major concerns.

The report covers the human rights situation in 155 countries and shows a worrying trend against women’s rights and gender equality in 2023. It discusses the suppression of women's protests in Iran, the Taliban's policies in Afghanistan that remove women from public life, and restrictive abortion laws in the US and Poland.

Additionally, the report warns about the dangers of new technologies. It suggests that advancements in artificial intelligence and mass surveillance could exacerbate conflicts, infringe on personal freedoms, and disrupt important elections.

These technologies, if not regulated, could be used to discriminate, spread misinformation, and create divisions among people.

Inside Leopoldo Alejandro Betancourt López’s Disruptive Digital-First Strategy for Hawkers

Like it or not, digital innovation isn’t a trend; it's a revolution. Leopoldo Alejandro Betancourt López, president of disruptive sunglasses brand Hawkers, has been a pivotal force in steering this revolution, transforming the sunglasses brand into a beacon of digital-first strategy success. Under his guidance, Hawkers has eschewed traditional retail models in favor of an approach that leverages the vast potential of online platforms, setting new standards in the eyewear industry and beyond.

Image provided by Alejandro Betancourt

From its inception, Hawkers was positioned to challenge the status quo. The decision to adopt a digital-first strategy was a bold move, aligning with Leopoldo Alejandro Betancourt López's vision of tapping into the burgeoning digital marketplace. This approach wasn’t merely about selling online; it was about reimagining how a brand could connect with consumers, engage with communities, and build a global presence without the constraints of physical retail.

Key Components of Leopoldo Alejandro Betancourt López’s Digital-First Strategy

Central to Hawkers' digital-first strategy was the creation of a state-of-the-art e-commerce platform. Betancourt López prioritized a seamless online shopping experience, from intuitive website navigation to mobile optimization and streamlined checkout processes. These efforts ensured that customers could enjoy a hassle-free shopping experience, mirroring the convenience and immediacy digital natives expect.

Betancourt López's strategic use of social media has been instrumental in Hawkers' rise. By harnessing platforms like Instagram and Facebook, Hawkers crafted a brand identity that was both aspirational and accessible. Through engaging content, influencer collaborations, and targeted advertising, Betancourt López managed to turn social media into a powerful sales and branding tool, connecting with millions worldwide.

“It was cool, it was fresh, and we were doing something different than anybody else at the time, which is online social, or social media marketing,” he said of using social media as an advertising tool. “And that approach totally disrupted the market in the way we penetrated the market. And I think that that innovation has built a huge brand that is today Hawkers.”

Underpinning the digital-first approach was a commitment to data-driven decision-making. Betancourt López leveraged analytics to gain insights into customer behavior, preferences, and trends. This information guided everything from marketing campaigns to product development, ensuring that Hawkers remained agile and responsive to its audience's evolving needs.

The digital-first strategy, while innovative, wasn’t without challenges. Market saturation and digital ad fatigue threatened to diminish Hawkers' online visibility. Moreover, maintaining a personal connection with customers in an online-only environment posed a significant hurdle. Leopoldo Alejandro Betancourt López and his team countered these obstacles with creativity and adaptability, employing content that cut through the noise and fostering community engagement to keep the brand personal and relatable.

Impact and Successes

Under Leopoldo Alejandro Betancourt López's visionary leadership, Hawkers hasn’t merely participated in the digital marketplace; it redefined it. The disruption caused by Hawkers in the traditional eyewear market is profound, challenging established norms and prompting a reevaluation of what it means to sell fashion accessories in the 21st century. By bypassing traditional retail channels and focusing on direct-to-consumer online sales, Betancourt López has enabled Hawkers to offer high-quality, fashionable sunglasses at a fraction of the cost of its competitors. This approach democratized stylish eyewear, making it accessible to a broader audience while pressuring traditional retailers to reconsider their pricing and marketing strategies in the face of an increasingly digital-first consumer base.

The success of Hawkers under Betancourt López is a testament to the power of digital platforms to level the playing field in industries traditionally dominated by heavyweight brands with extensive physical retail networks. The company’s agile strategy, which embraces social media marketing, influencer partnerships, and direct online sales, has allowed it to rapidly adapt to market trends and consumer preferences, outpacing competitors and capturing significant market share in a relatively short period.

With Betancourt López’s guidance, Hawkers has expanded its digital footprint across continents, reaching customers in over 50 countries. This international success story is built on a foundation of digital marketing excellence, which has not only amplified the brand's visibility but also fostered a global community of loyal customers.

This growth is characterized by a significant increase in sales volume, expansion of the product line to include a wider range of styles and designs, and the establishment of Hawkers as a recognized brand among consumers and industry insiders. The digital-first approach has allowed for a nimble market strategy in which new products can be tested, launched, and scaled with remarkable speed and efficiency. This adaptability has been vital to staying ahead of consumer trends and responding to the fast-paced fashion market.

“You could have many great ideas, but the execution is what matters,” he said. “The right executors or executives take these ideas into something … something pragmatic.”

Reddit is Slowly Getting Infested with AI Bots that is Promoting Products on the Platform

Many people all around the world add Reddit to their searches to find authentic and useful results. This practice has become so common that even Google recognized it and announced that it will use Reddit posts to train their AI. So, this means that now users will see Reddit posts and threads with AI generated content that will be made to promote different products. ReplyGuy, an AI service that automatically plug-in products on Reddit is pushing a lot auto-generated content on the platform. Some examples of it have already been seen on Reddit with one AI bot promoting a text-to-voice product called AnySpeech and another bot writing a comment about debt consolidation program and advertising Debt Freedom Now.

As per 404Media, there is also a video demo available that shows that users can write their product, name of the company and URL to advertise the product. There is also an option to choose keywords that can help the AI bot know which types of subreddits to look at while promoting the product. The video demo also shows how ReplyGuy is already replying to some subreddits and promoting the product naturally. The response then gets many upvotes and replies.

The creator of ReplyGuy, Alexander Belogubov, has also shared other bot-controlled accounts that are responding with different things all over Reddit. Belogubov also has a startup named “Stealth Marketing” that shares the ways users can advertise their products all over Reddit. The users of Reddit have always been suspicious of AI activities on the platform where an AI response looks human-like and can be seen promoting different products. But Reddit was still safe from too many bots on the platform as other social media sites have already become full of them. Reddit has already banned many AI accounts as well as the ones Alexander showed in his screenshots.

Even with all of these AI bots, Reddit has a long way to become a platform infested with AI. Many brands and companies are interested in Reddit for promoting their products to rank high on Google search. Many users on Reddit are against people creating fake stories on ChatGPT to post on Reddit and get engagements. Users of Reddit also identify and shame accounts that spam the votes and posts. A youtuber called SEO Jesus said that Reddit even has the ability to outrank top websites. ReplyGuy is doing spam and content manipulation on Reddit which should be addressed by Reddit if we want to protect the authenticity of this platform.

New Trends in AI, How Businesses Worldwide Are Embracing Change

A survey conducted in the summer of 2023 among more than 1,200 INSEAD alumni across different industries tells that people are not worried about AI potentially taking away their jobs but they are more worried about people misusing AI for harmful purposes. INSEAD also shows that many of the employees and businessmen across many industries and sectors have started using AI in their professional as well as personal lives.

Many survey respondents believe generative AI is more beneficial to employees than the top management as it increases the efficiency and enhances the work capabilities of those employees. Jason P. Davis, Associate Professor of Entrepreneurship and Family Enterprise at INSEAD says that this survey tells us about what top management think of using AI during work. We should know more about what people think of generative AI and what are their views on incorporating it at work. This way we can help industries and companies gain more efficiency.

More than half of the respondents who are well known in top business schools said that the organizations they are working at are already using artificial intelligence technologies at work. 27% of the organizations are planning to start using AI while 21% of the organizations have no plans of using AI. The thoughts about using AI in organizations were also varying across different geographical regions. Many of the respondents worldwide were really excited about the use of AI at work but the ones in Europe said that they think AI is going to benefit organizations more than the employees.

The group of Europeans surveyed were also less likely to use generative AI as compared to respondents in Asia and North America. However, that group also admitted that they can see AGI happening faster in Europe than in parts of North America. This survey also found out that communication sectors, financial and materials’ organizations are more likely to benefit from generative AI than the employees working in those organizations. Healthcare and utility organizations think that employees and organizations will benefit equally there if AI is to be incorporated in this sector.

Google's Controversial Purge: Employees Sacked for Anti-Israel Stance! Is Big Tech Suppressing Voices?

Tech giant Google is carrying on with its firing spree involving employees who it claims took part in anti-Israeli protests.

The news comes after the tech giant got spotlight for its contract in favor of the Israeli government that entailed a cloud computing initiative. This would bring the total figure for workers fired in the recent past up to 50.

These stats were confirmed by one leading activist organization, No Tech For Apartheid, who revealed how the company is punishing all those who raise their voice against injustice and therefore are getting penalized as a result of the act.

Meanwhile, another representative for the tech giant shed light on how more investigations are being conducted by Google and as more participation of workers seems to be increasing, they’re being shown the door.

A decent number of employees have started to take part in peaceful protests like sit-ins across the firm’s offices in the US. Common locations include New York City and Sunnyvale in California.

As the figure for firings spikes, the company’s CEO has been forced to provide a reply on this front regarding what the matter is really about and how the act is justified. This is where Sundar Pichai appeared in public to inform employees via a public memo on how no one would be allowed to make use of the firm’s platform as something personal "or to fight over disruptive issues or debate politics". He strongly feels that this is not the right way or place to debate such controversial matters.

But representatives from different activist groups fail to agree, adding that every employee has the right to speak their mind, whether he likes it or not. Silencing workers with threats is never okay and Google reasserting its power over such individuals is a poor example of leadership.

Critics condemn Sundar Pichai's stance against using Google's platform for political debates, arguing it stifles crucial discussions on social justice. They accuse Google of fostering a toxic corporate culture that prioritizes profit over employee well-being and moral values. This emphasis on financial gain at the expense of ethical considerations alienates workers and perpetuates a culture of complacency, undermining the company's integrity and social responsibility.

It so happens that this is the same group that publicly spoke out against Google and Amazon in the year 2021.

For those who might not be aware, it was April 22 when dozens of workers were arrested from various universities including NYU and Yale as tensions ran high regarding the conflict arising in the Gaza region.

Many opposed the US government’s stance on the matter and accused it of funding the genocide that has now reached 200 days. Seeing so many pro-Palestinian activists get arrested is worrisome as new waves of demonstrations as set to take center stage with sit-ins being planned across offices and leading highways as well as across entrances for airports as protests.

At the search engine giant’s office, the battle seems to be more between managers and workers who were fired as a result of this. The firm feels every worker that was shown the door caused nothing but disruption of the working environment but those fired claim those accusations to be false as they didn’t even enter the office once.

Google is accused of firing those who chose to leave the sit-in peacefully and even those who had stopped by to chat. Right before terminating them, Google’s investigators were tasked to identify those involved despite many wearing masks.

Therefore, the company is now justifying the act and refuting claims that it was done haphazardly because as per Google, every single termination was personally confirmed before being carried out.

However, those protesting stated how the organization works on a double standard basis in regards to which employees are disciplined and which aren’t. Moreover, a host of workers at Google continue to protest images and names of those working online and are therefore classified as pro-Palestinian.

What is interesting is how one worker is now going as far as to confirm how he was fired and then recalled by the company’s HR who accused him of blatantly taking part in violence and terrorism activities and that left him dumbfounded.

To be called a terrorist was a major deal and this was not something that anyone would take lightly, the fired worker who goes by the name Mohammad Khatami added.

In the past, we’ve seen Google firing many who criticized the firm but to see so many firings taking place as we speak in recent times is a major deal. In the past, the tech giant was said to possess the best reputation as being a diverse workplace that kept workers’ morale high and ensured internal culture was given the greatest importance.

But right now, we don’t see this happening. Many are questioning the decisions made by top leaders. Pichai has tried to defend his company where he added how it celebrated matters like openness in regards to work matters and not politics.

He further elaborated upon the goal of creating the best products as well as showing support for great ideas. What do you think?

Cybersecurity Resilience: Bouncing Back From Security Incidents

Cybersecurity resilience ensures businesses can continue operating during security incidents, upholding their reputation and trust with consumers.

Cyberattacks can be disastrous to businesses, disrupting their operations when successful. This effect can last long if a company is not prepared or equipped to deal with security incidents, leaving customers dissatisfied and unhappy. Affected companies can lose the majority of their customers to competitors if they are unable to recover quickly, thus putting them out of business.

Unfortunately, cyberattacks can occur at any time, so businesses need to remain active when attacked and be able to serve their customers as usual. This concept is called cyber security resilience and is essential for businesses to survive in competitive industries.

Cybersecurity Resilience Explained

Cyber security resilience is the ability of a company to keep running as intended during a challenging security incident that would have otherwise caused a shutdown or significantly reduced its operating capacity. This resilience helps companies uphold their reputation by keeping cyberattack incidents hidden from the public while they resolve them discreetly. It also makes them avoid the financial losses they would have incurred from shutting down.

Furthermore, being able to withstand cyberattacks can make a company more appealing to consumers. This demonstrates their adherence to industry-standard security practices and data protection regulations. This increases trust amongst consumers and can be a competitive advantage.

For an organization to be cybersecurity resilient, every employee must play their part in keeping it secure. This means they must all understand the risks of actions they take, be aware of vulnerabilities in the system, and know how to respond to attacks.

Companies need to weigh security risks against business opportunities and competitive advantages to determine whether they can absorb the possible cybersecurity incidents that may result. For example, using cloud computing can make a company more productive, efficient, and cost-effective. However, it can make them more vulnerable to attacks because there will be more attack vectors for malicious actors to potentially exploit.

Companies must identify the risks associated with any business practice and devise sound strategies to prevent them from manifesting into full-blown cyber attacks. They should also have rapid response plans to mitigate any threat they detect.

Why is Cybersecurity Resilience Important

Most businesses use the internet for their operations, making them targets for hackers and other cybercriminals. They must be able to deal with the threats these bad actors pose while continually serving their customers. This can be challenging because many internet-based businesses are expected to be active 24/7 or at least throughout regular working hours. Downtime can erode consumer trust and make a business lose market share.

Endnote

By creating a cybersecurity resilience plan, companies hope to be prepared to tackle any security incident that can affect their operations. Their strategy should include the continuous monitoring of their IT infrastructure to detect suspicious activities and signs of imminent threats. Some threats are almost impossible to fully avoid, so they should adapt their processes to keep them at bay and maintain core business functions whenever there is a disruption. They should also be ready to respond to any attack and get their system back online as soon as possible if a breach occurs.

Survey Reveals Amazon's Hold on Influencer-Driven Purchases, TikTok and Instagram Face Challenges

Izea, an influencer-marketing firm published a report about consumer-purchasing behavior in the USA. 94% of the people who have bought a product after getting inspired from an influencer on social media had purchased it from Amazon. This data suggests that when people want to buy a product after seeing an influencer using it on social media, they immediately go to Amazon. The report published in April 2024 stated that 59% of the respondents said that they buy a product after they see an influencer promoting or using it. 94% of the US citizens go to Amazon to buy the product an influencer was promoting.

This is bad news for TikTok and Instagram who are making their own online stores with in-app shopping for users. These online stores have features that are especially designed to help content creators increase the sales of products. If the users of these apps are Amazon customers, TikTok and Instagram have to change consumer behaviors in order to attract customers to their stores.

Similar to TikTok and Instagram, Amazon also works with influencers to increase its sales. Amazon has an Influencer Program with some tools and features that help them build their own stores and earn money from the purchases that have been made from their affiliate links.

Izea surveyed 12,00 US consumers to know about their purchasing behavior on Amazon. It also studied how influencers affect the shopping decisions of consumers. The results of the survey showed that 80% of social media users in the US are Amazon Prime members while 89% of them shop on Amazon at least once a month.

The other key takeaways from the survey showed that influencers themselves also shop on Amazon and are 2.1 times more likely to shop on Amazon once a week. 71% of the consumers said that they are likely to buy a product on Amazon if they are influenced by it on social media. 9.4% said they purchase the product from Walmart after seeing it on social media while 5.7% said that they use in-app shopping platforms.

People of ages between 45 to 60 are more likely to get influenced and purchase a product from Amazon. 70% of them admitted that they had done so previously. 76% of these 45-60 years old said that they prefer Amazon for buying products that were influencer-driven. On the other hand, people of ages 30-44 were likely to buy a product from in-app shopping platforms with 8% saying that they purchase the products directly from the app.

The survey also mentioned that 83% of consumers search for something thoroughly on social media before making a purchase with 63% of the people surveyed shopping on Amazon weekly. 67% of the surveyed people who were of ages 18-29 said that they are influenced by video content as compared to other content like images and texts for Amazon purchases.

Researchers At Mozilla Want WhatsApp To Step Up Efforts To Combat Election Misinformation

It’s the election period around the globe and an estimated four billion voters from different nations are set to take part in the endeavor.

So when you’ve got more than 50% of the global population in various nations making their way to the polls, the concerns about misinformation coming into play and persuading people’s opinions are certainly running high.

This is the main reason why we’ve got plenty of social media firms like TikTok, Meta, and even YouTube working day and night to make sure they’ve got the right safeguards in place to stop this from happening.

No one wishes to see fictional content being prompted and that means executives in charge of these leading social media apps are now on their toes to ensure this does not happen.

The goal here is to protect people from such rival apps whose motive might be more inclined to the likes of reach and greater scope. Such an absence is leading researchers from places like Mozilla to express their concerns on the matter as we speak.

90% of all such safety interventions that Meta has put into place seem to be linked to two of its leading social media platforms. No guesses here as to who they may be as it’s Instagram and Facebook.

However, researchers are reminding the tech giant about how it needs to make similar changes to its popular texting platform WhatsApp. There is no kind of public commitment related to making the right road map in terms of how elections would be carried out and how WhatsApp would be seemingly protected from misinformation being circulated.

In the past decade, we’ve seen WhatsApp become the main means through which people outside America communicate. Then in 2020, we saw the platform mention how it had billions of users making use of its services, transforming how communication is carried out.

But despite such stats being out in the open, it is truly amazing how Meta has failed to focus on WhatsApp turning into a major source for misinformation getting circulated as safety measures are very limited in this domain when we talk about elections.

A recent analysis revealed how Facebook made 95 new changes in anticipation of the election period since the start of 2016.

This is when the platform first raised eyebrows for not doing enough to stop fake news circulation and harbor extreme forms of political sentiments. Interestingly, WhatsApp’s contribution here was just 14.

In comparison to that, both Google and YouTube were making 35 and even 27. Then we had the likes of X making 34 and TikTok generating 21 respectively. So from what we can see here, Meta’s efforts towards the current election period appear to be very overwhelming with a distinct prioritization toward the Facebook app.

This is probably why researchers at the popular non-profit firm Mozilla are not happy as they are calling on the company to give rise to serious changes to how the app works on a polling day, months before the elections even begin.

What is interesting is how the researchers are calling for simple but effective changes like the addition of disinformation labels for content it feels is viral or continues to be forwarded at a faster pace than others. Similarly, tags like please verify are being promoted to ensure people can do their own research on this front instead of just blindly following what’s written online.

People are stopped from blasting messages to community members at the same time because new rules would force them to stop and think for a moment about what is going on and after reflection, if they still feel it’s alright then so be it.

Another interesting point on this front has to do with Mozilla asking the platform in the form of a pledge to roll out these changes before it's too late. And so far, it’s working as it has gotten close to 16,000 signatures, as confirmed by one rep at the media outlet Engadget.

What is even more interesting is how the feature of requesting people to take some time out to pause and reflect arose from features that Twitter rolled out to avoid misinformation seen on retweets.
