Researchers At Mozilla Want WhatsApp To Step Up Efforts To Combat Election Misinformation

It’s the election period around the globe and an estimated four billion voters from different nations are set to take part in the endeavor.

So when you’ve got more than 50% of the global population in various nations making their way to the polls, the concerns about misinformation coming into play and persuading people’s opinions are certainly running high.

This is the main reason why we’ve got plenty of social media firms like TikTok, Meta, and even YouTube working day and night to make sure they’ve got the right safeguards in place to stop this from happening.

No one wishes to see fictional content being prompted and that means executives in charge of these leading social media apps are now on their toes to ensure this does not happen.

The goal here is to protect people from such rival apps whose motive might be more inclined to the likes of reach and greater scope. Such an absence is leading researchers from places like Mozilla to express their concerns on the matter as we speak.

90% of all such safety interventions that Meta has put into place seem to be linked to two of its leading social media platforms. No guesses here as to who they may be as it’s Instagram and Facebook.

However, researchers are reminding the tech giant about how it needs to make similar changes to its popular texting platform WhatsApp. There is no kind of public commitment related to making the right road map in terms of how elections would be carried out and how WhatsApp would be seemingly protected from misinformation being circulated.

In the past decade, we’ve seen WhatsApp become the main means through which people outside America communicate. Then in 2020, we saw the platform mention how it had billions of users making use of its services, transforming how communication is carried out.

But despite such stats being out in the open, it is truly amazing how Meta has failed to focus on WhatsApp turning into a major source for misinformation getting circulated as safety measures are very limited in this domain when we talk about elections.

A recent analysis revealed how Facebook made 95 new changes in anticipation of the election period since the start of 2016.

This is when the platform first raised eyebrows for not doing enough to stop fake news circulation and harbor extreme forms of political sentiments. Interestingly, WhatsApp’s contribution here was just 14.

In comparison to that, both Google and YouTube were making 35 and even 27. Then we had the likes of X making 34 and TikTok generating 21 respectively. So from what we can see here, Meta’s efforts towards the current election period appear to be very overwhelming with a distinct prioritization toward the Facebook app.

This is probably why researchers at the popular non-profit firm Mozilla are not happy as they are calling on the company to give rise to serious changes to how the app works on a polling day, months before the elections even begin.

What is interesting is how the researchers are calling for simple but effective changes like the addition of disinformation labels for content it feels is viral or continues to be forwarded at a faster pace than others. Similarly, tags like please verify are being promoted to ensure people can do their own research on this front instead of just blindly following what’s written online.

People are stopped from blasting messages to community members at the same time because new rules would force them to stop and think for a moment about what is going on and after reflection, if they still feel it’s alright then so be it.

Another interesting point on this front has to do with Mozilla asking the platform in the form of a pledge to roll out these changes before it's too late. And so far, it’s working as it has gotten close to 16,000 signatures, as confirmed by one rep at the media outlet Engadget.

What is even more interesting is how the feature of requesting people to take some time out to pause and reflect arose from features that Twitter rolled out to avoid misinformation seen on retweets.

Loophole in Meta AI Allows Image Generation of Celebrities

Meta launched a new AI chatbot powered by Llama 3 last week. This chatbot is free to use on Meta’s platforms like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger. It is not designed to create images of any specific real person. However, a loophole has been discovered that allows it to do just that.

Jane Rosenzweig, who works at Harvard's College Writing Center, found that the AI tracks what users type before they actually send their requests. This means the AI starts preparing images based on what is being typed. For instance, if someone starts to type "Taylor Swift" but doesn't press the send button, the AI may show an image resembling her.

The loophole also works if names are slightly misspelled. For example, typing “Hilary Clinton” instead of “Hillary Clinton” or “Judi Garland” instead of “Judy Garland” can trick the AI and their images can be generated. This issue is significant because it could lead to misuse in creating misleading images or spreading disinformation.

Testing this, we found that typing part of a celebrity's name without completing the query could briefly produce an image of them. For example, typing "create an image of Taylor s" showed a picture that looked a lot like Taylor Swift.

Similarly, typing "create an image of elvi" displayed an image resembling Elvis. These images were visible before officially submitting the request, making it possible to capture them with a screenshot.

This discovery comes while Meta's Oversight Board is looking into how the company’s apps handle AI-generated content, especially concerning deepfakes of women. Meta has previously stated that its AI cannot generate specific images of people, including celebrities, because of ethical and legal reasons involving privacy and consent. Yet, this loophole suggests that the system can inadvertently create such images.

Meta’s approach to censoring AI-generated images is not unique. Google, for instance, restricted its Gemini AI from creating images of humans. Similarly, there have been concerns about Microsoft's AI tools not being restrictive enough in preventing potentially harmful images.

Proton Mail Announces ‘Dark Web Monitoring’ To Enhance Security For Paid User Subscriptions

Proton Mail is rolling out a new dark web monitoring endeavor for enhanced security purposes but wait, not everyone can avail of the feature.

Only paid users will benefit as the rollout tries to scan disguised parts from the web for Proton Mail’s email IDs. In case the users are located, they would generate security alerts which entail actions taken to help ward off the risks.

This new feature would display all sorts of breaches that it feels your account might have been involved in in the past. It would arise with red indicators which let the user know which one has the most risk. Moreover, anything it feels is high risk would be the one that exposes the user’s password for example. And therefore the goal would be to allow it to alter this immediately.

Proton has similarly spoken about how the number of breach attempts continues to grow exponentially from what we’ve seen in the past. This has affected close to 353 million users and that would transform it into becoming the worst year as far as such malicious attempts are concerned.

We saw in January how plenty of researchers located a database that ended up putting close to 26 billion records on display. This was so much that it soon achieved the tag to become the mother of all breach attempts online. After all, it served as the list featuring all the past breaching attempts that arose.

Proton Mail has planned to monitor a host of customized domain emails as well as external IDs where alert notifications are generated to the user’s phone whenever the data is seemingly breached online.

You can better locate alerts on the dark web through Proton Mail’s Security Center too by navigating through your respective Privacy and Security. At the same time, you’ll find email subscriptions beginning at just $3.99 every month.

AI Dominance Unveiled, ChatGPT-4's Counseling Superiority Stuns, Bing Outsmarts Half of Psychologists in Study

A new study published by Frontiers in Psychology studied similarities between AI and human psychologists and found out that AI is better in understanding human emotions and counseling them. This study was mainly done on ChatGPT-4, Google Bard (also known as Gemini) and Bing and the aim of the study was to assess how well these AI models understand social intelligence. ChatGPT-4 was far better than all the human psychologists that participated in the study, while Bing outperformed half of them. Google Bard was only better than psychologists who were pursuing bachelor's degrees in psychology.

Many Large Language Models (LLMs) are developed in a way that they can easily answer questions, translate languages and even make conversations that are quite similar to humans. This is possible due to structures called neural systems that are responsible for human-like responses from LLMs. Many studies have been done previously that prove that LLMs can help in diagnosing mental health conditions but no study was done about how LLMs can prove to perform with social contexts.

One of the authors of the study, Fahmi Hassan Fadhel, says that since LLMs have proved that they are capable of counseling and psychotherapies, many psychologists can feel threatened as these AI models can easily take away their jobs. The way an AI model can understand human emotions and feelings so well and provide suggestions, it can prove to be more useful than human psychotherapists but it is a very alarming issue.

For this study, 180 male psychologists were included from King Khalid University in Saudi Arabia and were divided according to their educational levels from graduated to doctoral students. The participants and LLMs (ChatGPT, Bard, Bing) were asked to answer 64 scenarios taken from the Social Intelligence Scale. The results were made with two criteria – The soundness of judgment and ability to act wisely in social situations. The results proved that some AI models have advanced in a way that they can even outsmart professional human psychologists.

ChatGPT-4 answered 59 out of 64 questions on the Social Intelligence Scale and surpassed all the human psychologists. The average score of human psychologists was 39.19 for bachelor students and 46.73 for doctoral students. Bing scored 48 out of 64 questions. It outperformed 90% bachelor students and 50% doctoral students. Bing could only answer 40 out of 64 questions. The study shows how quickly AI is developing and excelling in every field. Even though these results by LLMs were impressive, it is also a matter of concern about whether AI should be given authority to talk about sensitive matters such as mental health issues.

WhatsApp Plans New Feature for Web Client

WhatsApp is developing a new feature for its web client that allows users to add notes to contacts. This feature is still being worked on and will be available in an upcoming update, as per WBI. It will let users include personal details for each contact, which is very useful for business accounts.

This helps them remember important details about their customers like past conversations and individual preferences. Recently, WhatsApp tested this feature in an update for the Android beta version. The latest update showed that users could add specific messages directly to notes. This feature will help businesses by allowing them to note important information about customer interactions.

The new feature will have a text field on the chat information screen for users to write notes. This will be part of a future update for WhatsApp Web. For businesses, being able to write down important customer information in WhatsApp will make managing customer details easier. They will not need separate tools or systems, which saves time and resources.
Also, this feature will make customer interactions better. Businesses can tailor their communications based on the notes they have, making customers feel more special. These notes will be private, seen only by the business, and customers will not know about them.

WhatsApp plans to share more details about this feature as they continue to work on it. The introduction of the contact note feature is part of WhatsApp's efforts to improve the user experience and expand its business services.

Businesses will soon be able to add notes to contacts on WhatsApp, enhancing customer management and personalizing interactions.

Sustainability Guilt: 57% Feel Remorse at Home; 28% Fully Embrace Eco-Living, Mainly Millennials

A survey published by Seventh Generation found out that only 14% of Americans think of sustainability as their priority when shopping around. One in six Americans admitted that they are not aware of ingredients in the products they buy, and most of them were Gen-Z with 19% being least informed. The survey was conducted among 2,000 Americans to find out how important they think of sustainability and the results showed that most of them are not aware of it.

57% of the respondents said that they are not quite living in their homes guilt free because of sustainability. 40% of Americans in the survey were somewhat sure that their lifestyle and the products they buy are environmentally friendly. 28% were completely sure of living an environmentally sustainable lifestyle with most of them being millennials (42%). When asked about their definition of sustainable lifestyle, 73% of those surveyed answered that they think of sustainability as knowing the ingredients of things they buy. 79% of the millennials and 65% of the baby boomers strictly want to know the ingredients of their products before buying them.

The survey also asked the respondents about the necessities they need to care about their homes. 70% answered with trash bags, 67% answered dish wash and 65% said laundry detergent. But a quarter of Americans didn’t think of these products as something that is harmful to the environment. Respondents also weren’t aware that many common items could produce fossil fuels like toothpaste (39%), plastic dishes (35%), candles (32%), and laundry detergent (26%).

CEO of Seventh Generation, Alison Whritenour, said that many Americans aren’t aware that most of their household items are petroleum based. It is easily possible to make plant based products that are not able to harm the environment and people can use these products without any guilt. 48% of the Americans surveyed have said that consumers shouldn’t be responsible for the safety of products they buy. 45% held brands responsible for product safety. 42% of the respondents suggested that consumers shouldn’t be worried about a product's safety and do extensive research before purchasing them.

45% aren’t sure if they can completely get rid of products with fossil fuels from their homes, while 55% said that they will completely switch their products to live a complete environmentally friendly lifestyle. Some are willing to pay more for sustainable products (45%), some said that they would only watch streaming platforms on TV (23%), others promised to drink only water (18%). The top product that is hard to give up for Americans is laundry detergent (18%). They don’t want to give up on it for a sustainable lifestyle.

Report Highlights Costly AI Model Training, Potential Data Shortage Impacting Future Development

Stanford University's latest AI Index Report talks about many AI trends, as it shows that it is very costly to train AI models and AI development can get affected with lack of data in the future. Many AI companies do not mention how much cost it takes to train and develop an AI model but one thing is sure that their cost can be in millions of dollars. The Artificial Intelligence Index Report highlights the estimations about how much money it takes to train an AI model. For instance, the Transformer Model [the foundational block to most modern large language models (LLMs)] only costs $930 to train.

RoBERTa Large which was released in 2019 is trained after spending $160,000 on it. ChatGPT-4 by OpenAI and Gemini Ultra by Google cost around $78 million and $191 million respectively. These costs of already developed AI models suggest that the AI models that are still under developmental stages probably cost around billions of dollars.

There is also another challenge for many AI developers and that is the lack of data to train their AI models. Many AI models have been developed after giving them data from different books, articles and other sources. But there is a huge dependency on AI models for data and information. There is a chance that many data scientists will not know what data to give these AI models in order to improve them in the upcoming years. Epochai published a report in 2022 that predicted that data scientists will run out of high quality language data by 2024, low quality language data will be all used up in the upcoming two decades and image data will be finished between 2030-2040.

One of the solutions to this problem is to train LLMs by the synthetic data that is produced by themselves. Researchers from Stanford say that this solution can avoid data depletion and can also provide data when the naturally occurring data is scattered everywhere. But there are also some limitations with training AI models with synthetic data. LLMs can forget this kind of data and start producing outputs that are poorly synthesized. Their data will be limited and they will forget the true data distributions.

WhatsApp To Soon Allow Users To Create Events Through Community Group Chats

WhatsApp is on another mission to create ease for its users who make use of group chats frequently.

The popular texting platform is rolling out a new endeavor for creating events through community group chats as mentioned by WABetaInfo who was the first to announce the discovery.

For now, it’s up for grabs to a limited number of testers online but if things go as planned, there’s no reason why the masses won’t benefit from it too.

This new ‘Event’ option is designed to allow users across the platform’s community group to produce events on the chat. It can be found through the attachment panel where eligible testers can make the most of it for the likes of online meetings, seminars, and more.

As per the screenshots, users can feature details like date, location, as well as time. They would then end up linking this to calls rolled out on WhatsApp after an event gets created through the platform. Users get the chance to select if they would like to have links included for accepting video calls or voice calls across the invite.

Members taking part in this community group accept event invites and also attain alerts regarding changes done by a certain creator in question. Websites like these note how events feature on the app could be attained through older beta variants so that the majority of users can benefit from it online in the next few weeks.

You can always refer to the platform’s Community in case you need a reference as it brings everyone together, no matter what the topic of discussion would be or which groups are relevantly involved.

Similarly, users can get the chance to give rise to communities that go up to 100 groups featuring close to 2000 members as a whole as revealed by the latest support document.

The platform creates things through automated means as a part of the Announcement group for every community where admin members could make use of this for sending messages to every single community member.

Other than this, the platform is making efforts toward exploring various features to improve user engagement on the platform.

We’re also seeing the famous texting platform work on a host of different features like Favorites, third-party app support, default for uploading media in original quality, and also picture in picture mode.

In the past couple of months, Whatsapp has included a few features such as video forward or rewind as well as 16 different channel admin members. This would also entail a new option for filtering out group chats. Users can search for chats with ease via several filters that are found at the chat list’s top.

Influencer Earnings Set to Rise in 2024

eMarketer - a market-research firm, has released data about influencer earnings. The report says that influencer earnings from social media are expected to grow by 16.5% in 2024, reaching $13.7 billion.
Affiliate marketing, where influencers earn commissions through trackable links or specific codes used by their followers to make purchases, is becoming more popular. It's projected to bring in over $1 billion for creators in 2024, marking a 22.6% increase from the previous year.

Platforms like LTK and Amazon have traditionally been used by influencers to host their affiliate links, but TikTok Shop, launched in the US last year, is pushing this growth further. TikTok, along with Instagram and YouTube, is heavily promoting affiliate marketing.

Instagram and YouTube are also improving their affiliate marketing programs. Affiliate marketing is seen as an inclusive way for creators, including those of color who may face challenges in securing brand deals, to earn money.

YouTube continues to be a dominant platform for influencer earnings, with direct platform payouts to creators predicted to rise by 10% to $3.2 billion this year. The platform's investment in influencer marketing has surged, especially for its shorts format, which saw a 700% increase in spending in 2023.

The demand for longer videos is one reason why YouTube is expected to be the most lucrative platform for creators in 2024. Platforms like TikTok are also supporting creators with initiatives that compensate them for creating longer content.

Despite this, direct monetization efforts like platform payouts are still challenging for many creators, especially with the prevalence of ads in short-form videos, which are less directly tied to creator income.

In addition to brand deals and affiliate marketing, influencers have other revenue streams such as launching courses, merchandise, and creator subscriptions. These alternative sources are particularly beneficial for creators with smaller audiences, helping them earn a living even without large-scale fame. The market for influencers has become saturated, reducing the likelihood of becoming an overnight sensation on platforms like TikTok. Instead, many are finding ways to monetize their content effectively over time.

Tipping, merchandise, and paid subscriptions, though still small parts of the overall earnings pie for social media creators, are growing gradually. TikTok has particularly embraced tipping, introducing features that allow followers to send money to creators either through their profiles or during live streams.

Overall, the ways influencers make money are diversifying. While brand partnerships remain crucial, the rise of affiliate marketing and the expansion of other income avenues are helping creators adapt to a changing digital landscape.

US consumers are spending more despite economic challenges like high inflation and rising interest rates, which in turn supports the growth in creator earnings. As the influencer market evolves, those who diversify their income streams and adapt to new opportunities are likely to see the most success.

CounterPoint Data Shows Global PC Shipments are Growing, With Lenovo Taking the Lead

According to the latest data from CounterPoint Research, Global PC shipments have grown 3% YoY in Q1 of 2024. The PC global shipment was seeing a huge decline for the past 8 quarters due to low demand and inventory correction. The rest of quarters in 2024 are also going to see a growth in YoY shipments by 3%. The biggest reason for this growth will be AI PC momentum. There will also be different sectors seeing shipment recoveries and overall a fresh hand new replacement cycle.

The biggest PC shipments in Q1 of 2024 were by Lenovo. Lenovo shipments were up by 8% which is a lot compared to its shipments in Q1 of 2023. HP and Dell, which have the huge market shares, 21% and 16% respectively, didn’t see much growth in their shipments in Q1 of 2023. Their shipments are expected to increase in the coming quarters, driven by their shipments in North America. Apple’s shipment growth also increased by 2% and that was because of its M3 Base Models.
45% of the PCs being shipped this year are going to be powered by AI so we can say that 2024 is going to be an AI driven year for PC shipments. William Li, who is a Senior Analyst at CounterPoint, thinks that AI capable laptops and PCs are going to see a huge increase in their shipments in 2025-2026. Many more generative AI functions will be incorporated in them by then. AI laptops are going to be a huge catalyst in driving out more shipments of PCs. Many manufacturers are ready to promote their AI PCs as their main products in the second half of 2024. Overall, 2024 is going to be a lucky year for PC vendors.

New Report Highlights Ongoing WordPress Vulnerabilities, With 20% Critical And 67% Medium Threats Identified

WPScan’s 2024 WordPress vulnerability report talks about some security threats that WordPress keeps on experiencing and the website publishers should be aware of them. The report says that 20% of the vulnerabilities in the report were critical level threats while 67% of them were medium level threats. There are some threats that are due to malware and website vulnerabilities that cannot be dodged most of the time. But there are some mistakes that publishers make that make their websites more vulnerable to hackers. This can be avoided by taking right decisions while disabling or updating an extension.

The highest level of threats WordPress has is by critical vulnerabilities that make up 2.38% of the total vulnerabilities. But when these critical vulnerabilities are combined with other high level threats which are 17.68%, they make up 20% of all the vulnerabilities. There are two types of vulnerabilities on WordPress– Authorized Vulnerabilities and Unauthorized Vulnerabilities. Authorized Vulnerabilities are those where the attacker first takes the user credentials and other permission levels to exploit a specific vulnerability. Unauthorized vulnerabilities directly launch the attack, without taking the user credentials first. These kinds of vulnerabilities are easiest to exploit. According to the WPScan report, 22% of the vulnerabilities reported didn’t require any authentication while the vulnerabilities requiring admin permission levels were 30.71%.

The reason why many websites on WordPress are vulnerable to malware is because of their weak passwords and nulled plugins. Nulled plugins are pirated softwares that are easy to get infected by malwares. Weak passwords can easily be guessed through brute force, and by social engineering tactics like phishing and pretexting.

Vulnerabilities that required administrator level credentials were the highest to be exploited with 30.71% vulnerabilities, followed by CSRF (Cross Site Reverse Forgery) with 19.26% vulnerabilities. The others included Contributor (19.62%), Unauthenticated Vulnerabilities (12.35%) and Author (1.19%). Broken Access Controller in WordPress refers to security failure that allows an attacker to gain access to high credential permissions. The WPScan report shows that Broken Access Controller gives access to 84.99% vulnerabilities, followed by 20.64% from SQL injection.

The highest number of vulnerabilities on WordPress were reported in third-party plugins and themes. A total of 13 vulnerabilities were reported in WordPress core in 2023. Only one vulnerability out of 13 was a high level threat which is the second biggest threat after Critical. All these levels of threats are made by the Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS). Site audits are not responsible for covering website security but they should talk about security headers. The security issue can quickly become an SEO issue if the website’s ranking starts getting low because of security concerns. Strong passwords and two factor authentication should be the main priority for keeping a website away from malware and hackers.

Over 17 Billion Personal Accounts Leaked Worldwide Since 2004

Cybersecurity researchers found that data breaches increased globally in the first quarter of 2024, reaching over 17 billion exposed personal accounts. Surf Shark reported a fivefold increase in leaked accounts as compared to last year. The stats show that the US, Russia, and China were the most affected countries in 2024.

The monitoring data from Surfshark indicates that over 17.2 billion accounts have been breached since 2004, with approximately 6.5 billion having unique email addresses. This suggests that some accounts were breached multiple times due to people using the same email or password for different online profiles.

To address this ongoing threat, Surfshark emphasizes the importance of creating strong passwords, avoiding reuse, and being cautious when sharing personal information online. In terms of breaches by country, the US leads with three billion breached accounts since 2004, followed by Russia, China, France, and Germany.

Looking at per capita breaches, Russia has the highest rate with 16.8 accounts breaches per resident. This is followed by the US, South Sudan, France and Czechia. Other countries among the top ten most breached include Brazil, UK, India, Italy and Canada.

These findings highlight the persistent and widespread nature of data breaches, underscoring the need for individuals and organizations to prioritize cybersecurity measures to protect personal information online.

Apple removes WhatsApp and Threads from App Store in China

Apple has taken down two popular apps, WhatsApp and Threads, from its App Store in China. The Chinese government requested this removal, citing national security concerns. Despite their availability elsewhere, iPhone users in China can no longer download these messaging and social apps.

The Cyberspace Administration of China instructed Apple to remove WhatsApp and Threads due to worries about national security. Apple emphasized its commitment to complying with local laws, even when it disagrees with them. Failure to do so could result in the App Store being shut down in China.

Threads had been accessible in China since July, surprising many given China's ban on Meta services. Similarly, WhatsApp remained available for an extended period. While Meta services can still be accessed via VPN tools, the removal of the apps may hinder their usage for iPhone users in China.

Apple frequently complies with China’s requests to remove apps, including VPNs, news, and social media platforms, when legally obliged to do so. The timing of this removal coincides with Apple CEO Tim Cook’s recent visit to the region. Some speculate it could be related to ongoing tensions surrounding the potential divestment of TikTok.

This move by China may signal the beginning of more app bans in the lead-up to a reported deadline for unregistered foreign apps. Users in China may need to rely on VPN tools to continue accessing certain services, as the government tightens control over digital platforms.

Google Play Protect provides protection against harmful malwares and viruses to Android. But even it can miss some of the malware that can ultimately harm your Android device. In Android 15, there are some new updates and features that will automatically protect the Android from malwares in apps in a new way. This new way is by putting misbehaving or apps with harmful activities in quarantine. Mishaal Rehman, who is an AOSP code expert, says that quarantining the apps manually is not possible. So, Android 15 will have a system that will quarantine the app automatically if it detects something acting up in the app.

When in quarantine, the apps will still be visible on the home screen and among other apps. But users won’t be able to see the notifications from those apps and all the activities on the app will be stopped. The apps that will be linked to the affected app will also be not able to use services from that app. Broadcasts from other apps or systems will also not be possible when an app will be in quarantine.

To put it simply, quarantined apps will act similarly to disabled apps. Even their APIs are the same with only one extra flag added to this system. Users will have to give permission of QUARANTINE_APPS in order to put an app that is acting suspicious in quarantine. The permission will be given from Google Play Store but Play Store isn’t using it yet. The best ever Android in which quarantine feature was spotted was Android 14 QPR2 Beta 1 last year. There are some speculations that this feature may not be even in Android 15 because Google Play Stores and Google Play Services haven’t started asking for its permissions.

Global IT Spending to Surge 8% in 2024, Says Gartner Forecast

Gartner, an analyst firm, has predicted in its report that IT spending is going to grow by 8% in 2024. This spending will approximately be $5.06 trillion and it will be $8 trillion by 2030. In the last quarter, Gartner had predicted that the IT growth will be 6.8% this year but now they have revised it to 8%. The two major components that are going to play an important part in spending growth are Data Center Systems and Devices. The growth of Data Center Systems was 4% in 2023 but now it is going to increase up to 10% in 2024. Devices had a -9.1% growth in 2023 but now it is set to increase to 3.6% in 2024.

The reason why Data Center Systems are going to see a huge increase is probably due to incorporation of AI in the systems. John David Lovelock, who is a VP analyst at Gartner, says that in 2023, many organizations and companies were talking about imposing generative AI. We are lucky enough to see that these weren’t just the talks, because 2024 is seeing generative AI in most of the systems. Companies have planned a smooth way to impose generative AI in their systems. Even the companies which still haven’t executed AI in 2024, they are planning to do it in 2025. The tech companies which were one step ahead have already started using AI in their products and services. Their clients are also satisfied with these setups so many other companies are following suit.

Talking about Devices, John David Lovelock said that the life span of mobile phones is decreasing and that’s why people are replacing them quickly. This is the reason spending on Devices is going to be about $688 billion in 2024, compared to $664 in 2023. Now we will have to look forward to the real IT spendings at the end of this year to check whether predictions by Gartner were right or not.

Report Shows Many Teens in the US Own VR Goggles But They are Not Much Interested in Using them

Reviews of Apple’s Vision Pro are kind of mixed with some users not satisfied with its huge price which is $3500 and more. Many people say they are loving this new tech device but are not completely sure how and why they should use this product. There are also other high tech goggles that are less expensive and have a number of features that engage the users like playing games. But people are still not satisfied with those goggles too as they have some of their own problems.

If we talk about sales of Meta’s headset called Quest which is not as costly as Apple’s Vision Pro, it has sold over 20 million of them as of 2023. These headsets are also less expensive, starting at the price of $500. But there are some reasons why people are not fond of using them. According to a survey by Piper Sandler, teenagers are that group of people who don't think of using headsets or tech goggles that much. In this technology driven age, teens should be the people who are into these kinds of tech devices but they don't like putting on headsets even if they already own one.

The survey also tells that 33% of the teens own a VR headset. But 56% of them do not use it as much as it is expected from them. Two years ago, this percentage of teens was 48% in the US. The survey also says that the respondents of the survey (6020 US teens with average age of 16.1) say that they are thinking of spending $225 on video games in the first half of 2024. So, VR or AR companies should look for attracting teens to spend the money on their headsets for playing games instead of playing them on their mobiles or some other console.

Public Chat Servers On The Rise As Alarming Reports Suggest Discord Chats Are Being Sold

If you happen to be using Discord as your go-to texting platform then this next piece of news is for you.

New reports are highlighting how you shouldn’t be trusting texting apps such as these that end up transforming your chats into something ephemeral. And that’s very true when you take into consideration a host of public servers that has the capability of tracking nearly 600 million people across 14k servers.

As per 404 Media, Spy Pet is one such service that is infamously selling users access to another platform featuring close to 3 billion Discord texts. They end up offering data credits to various clients who pay using Bitcoin, crypto, and Ethereum. Moreover, searching individuals will even unveil which servers their respective accounts are linked to such as GitHub.

Spy Pet has gone as far as to list nearly 86,000 more servers that entail zero bots but the fact that it exists is enough understanding for many to take a step back and reconsider its privacy and security.

As mentioned by the expert, Discord fails to generate texts through server channels like blog posts or even feeds on social media. It’s easier to access them publicly and search for them. However, it would not be wrong to add how plenty of bans do continually exist and the threat of your messages being handled and accessed by bots is scary, to say the least.

Private texts cannot be seen on Spy Pet and therefore remain secure till today. Moreover, Spy Pet is asking people more about training models linked to the AI domain or even federal agents in search of newer sources including widespread intel.

This is designed to make sure contacts for deals remain in place but users are getting very weary about the whole scenario every since this report has come out. As mentioned by 404 Media, pressing on links such as Request Removal would end up showing clips featuring entertainment figures who laugh at the mere thought of making advanced payments right before a sudden comment like ‘Are you serious’ pops up.

Users making use of Spy Pet could also be reassured that all searches being carried out on the device are more than safe and confidential and provide random names of users.

Here is where the author finds all public Discord chats he ever rolled out into the tab for research or for the sake of reporting in that particular server list of Spy Pet. Moreover, those who failed to pay for access to their texts could only witness benign elements that are faced by the public such as stickers, charted members, and even emojis with time.

Such indications being in the easy reach of Spy Pet misusing it is very concerning for obvious reasons and the new warning coming into play has people talking.

Pakistan Blocks Social Media Platform X for National Security

In February, Pakistan blocked access to social media platform X, previously known as Twitter. The block was attributed to national security concerns. The interior ministry stated that the platform was inaccessible to users, but officials initially did not acknowledge any restrictions. Users had reported problems since mid February, and both the government and Pakistan telecommunication Authority (PTA) remained silent.

However, the Ministry of Interior recently confirmed the shutdown in a court submission, attributing it to X's failure to comply with lawful directives and address concerns regarding platform misuse. The ministry asserted that the ban was imposed to uphold national security, maintain public order, and preserve the nation's integrity. It also claimed that X was reluctant to resolve the issues.

Activists challenging the ban argued that it aimed to suppress dissent following the February 8 general elections, which faced widespread allegations of vote rigging and protests. The decision to block X came after considering confidential reports from Pakistan's intelligence and security agencies, citing hostile elements on the platform with intentions to destabilize the country.

The Sindh high court ordered the government to restore access to X within a week, following a challenge against the ban. Access to X has been sporadic, with users resorting to virtual private networks due to intermittent availability. Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI), led by former Prime Minister Imran Khan, is a prominent user of social media platforms. Khan himself has a significant following on X.

In conclusion, Pakistan's decision to block social media platform X reflects concerns over national security and the platform's perceived role in fostering instability. Despite legal challenges, access to X remains restricted, prompting users to seek alternative means to access the platform.

Analysis of 200 Million Papers by Turnitin Shows that Many Students are Using AI tools to write their Papers

Turnitin used its new AI detector to check 200 million papers and it was revealed that most of the students had used Large Language Models (LLMs) to write the papers. About 11% which makes about 22 million papers had used 20% of AI written content. About 3% or 6 million papers had 80% AI written content. The chief product officer of Turnitin, Annie Chechitelli, says that technology is quickly incorporating itself in the education field and it is crucial for learning too. But most of the students in education are looking for ways to use technology for their own advantage and to perform better than everyone else.

From the past year, AI has slowly spreading its claws all over the world and now every other person is familiar with the use of AI and how they can benefit from it. Students are also using AI to write their papers and assignments but these kinds of practices are making students think less. Many of the AI tools like ChatGPT are being used by students daily to complete their work quickly. Tyton Partners conducted the survey to find out how many students use AI tools to write their papers and if they will continue using it even if their educational institutions ban them. 75% of the students said that they are not going to stop using AI even if their educational institutions ban the use of AI for students.
The amount of AI writing in papers prove that students are continuously using AI so educational authorities should impose some rules about use of AI. They should also talk with students to let them know what kind of use of AI is acceptable and which kind of AI usage is not acceptable in educational settings.
