Scams Related To Cryptocurrency Giveaways Have Tripled In 2022, Says New Report

A new report is shedding light on the growing number of cryptocurrency scams in 2022. The whole idea appears to be related to luring innocent victims and robbing them of their hard-earned money.

On average, a striking 300% increase is astonishing, and the report proved how common targets included users fluent in English and Spanish. Moreover, the actors behave as celebrity deepfakes and get the job done in a manner that’s extremely deceptive.

The news comes to us thanks to a cybersecurity researchers’ firm named Group-IB. And they’ve managed to identify around 2000 domains that were produced just this year and for this particular malicious intent.

In the recently published report, we get more news about how these fake giveaways entailing cryptocurrency have risen nearly 5 times, which is in stark comparison to what we witnessed last year.

On average, the sites have a reach that goes up to 15,000 viewers. And if we do take such data to be correct, you’ll be amazed to find out that around 30 million individuals. Interestingly, the report even highlights how top domains that most people deem trustworthy were also included.

Researchers then went on to shed light on how the scammers attempted to target a few video platforms so they could better promote their scams via live streams. And the icing on the cake was to entail top celeb deepfake names like Elon Musk and Cathie Wood, among so many others.

YouTube ranked number one on the list, closely followed by Twitch taking second place.

These promotional streams were seen arising from a few accounts that were hijacked by others involved in the scam. And such accomplices have even rewarded a share for their hard work that could go up to 50% of the earnings made.

Experts delineated that those channels that had more subscribers were the ones that were targeted the most as it was more difficult to block out such events. Remember, the bigger the audience involved, the greater the number of reports required to activate YouTube’s flagging system of moderation.

So many campaigns featuring leading names in the world of showbiz and entertainment, including prominent faces like Cristiano Ronaldo and Nayib Buckele were featured on the front.

This just goes to show how active such scammers have turned out to be in this field and how they’re not taking up new developments under their wing to promote scams in the most real manner imaginable.

But what is the reason for such a massive influx of scams arising spontaneously? Well, sources believe the main reason definitely has to do with easy tools for such things being available. Hence, with the right arsenal in store, crypto giveaways are made to appear as real as possible. And they take advantage of vulnerable victims keen on making a quick buck online.

Despite such scammers having poor technical skills, they still manage to do the job great, thanks to the tools in the store.

In the same way, the forums through which such activities are carried out are also very well developed. It’s actually nothing less than a marketplace. It’s very luring and common for people with zero knowledge of crypto to get involved and target others in this way.

As far as costs related to making this scam a success are concerned, you can get a good deepfake for just $30. Meanwhile, a complete design for a crypto scam arises at $300, and manuals cost just $100. Toolkits arise between $500 to $1500 each month.

To stay safe, well, simply be vigilant of such scams. Remember to never trust anyone portraying a giveaway of this kind, and if you’re interested in promotions, do conduct a background check.

A little safety and awareness can help you save thousands of dollars. So avoid giving out sensitive details because you never know how and where they end up being used.

Also, any promotion that entails a leading celebrity is not always authentic. Be aware that deepfakes do exist, and they’re out to get vulnerable targets like you. Go through the channel’s history and verify its name. If it’s not on the celeb’s official channel, then it’s likely to be fake.

Spell-checking feature in web browsers can transmit your password to Google and Microsoft

Many of us click the “show-password” option more often to check spelling to get it accurate. The server also sometimes warns us when the password does not match. The recent study held by Josh Summit has produced some threatening results regarding this spellcheck feature.

This feature transmits the form data to google and Microsoft, leaving its operators vulnerable to the situation. It might often also transfer personally identifiable information (PII). The well-intended element of these web browsers may concern many parties.

As it leaves its users doubtful of the feature, many of us have enabled the feature to save time by simply copying and pasting the password and double-checking the spelling. It raises concerns about what happens if our data gets transmitted and how to protect it, especially when it's regarding the password field.

Chrome and Edge ship contain the feature of spellchecking in the setting. Both apps facilitated these features, but they can only function manually. The users enabled the feature to save time. Yet, it leads to harmful ways of transmitting the data.

Once the feature is enabled, it automatically transfers the data to google and Microsoft. Josh Summit, co-founder and CTO of JavaScript, detected this fault while running some tests. The research reported that 73% of these sites and groups transmit the data to a third party if you click the show-password feature.

He further elaborated that once the feature is enabled, it could transfer the PII information along with Social Security numbers (SSNs), name, address, date of birth, bank, and payment material.

However, the form data is said to be happening securely over HTTPS. Google is also working to secure its community’s well-being by eliminating the spellcheck feature. As for now, we can put out of action this Enhance spellcheck feature by going to settings and turning it off.

Moreover, the spellchecking feature on google explicitly says that the text you type in the browser is sent to google. However, it is made clear that google does not transfer the data to any third party but instead processes it on the server temporarily.

Furthermore, Google is proactively working to remove the password from spellchecking to ensure the safety of the operators. It is said that both AWS and LastPass have mitigated the issue by simply asking their users to put the HTML attribute spellcheck=false.

This feature restricted the spellchecker from detecting the default log-in of the web browser. Most companies can also stop spell jacking by simply removing the ability to show passwords.

Although spell jacking could be possible even after deleting the feature, it could prevent passwords from being sent. The Otto-js team has reached out to Microsoft 365, Alibaba Cloud, Google Cloud, AWS, and LastPass to look into the matter and safeguard their customer’s privacy.

515 New Apps Mark the Rise of Anonymity

The rise of the internet created a lot of connections between people, but it also had a side effect of publicizing most of the things that we do on a day to day basis. It turns out that people are starting to value their anonymity because of the fact that this is the sort of thing that could potentially end up surfing online without having their privacy violated. This trend can be seen with the startling rise in apps that tout anonymity as a key feature with all things having been considered and taken into account.

The recent App Intelligence report released by Sensor Tower shows that the number of new anonymous apps have been rising for quite some time. Back in 2014, there were 527 new apps that used anonymity related keywords in their descriptions. With all of that having been said and now out of the way, it is important to note that this more than doubled by 2021 to 1,257.

The first half of 2022 has seen 515 new apps enter the fray. That is somewhat lower than 2021, but in spite of the fact that this is the case it still indicates that consumers are valuing their online privacy and are willing to use anonymous apps to ensure it. One of the apps in this category, Safe Security, has managed to receive about 448 million worldwide downloads. Its main function has less to do with providing anonymity, though. Rather, it is supposed to block calls from anonymous callers since this can help users feel safer than might have been the case otherwise.

Around 446 of the 1,257 anonymity focused apps in 2021 were privacy tools. 172 of them were social media platforms, and that indicates that the world of social media might change somewhat moving forward. Users who want to connect with others whilst maintaining an anonymous image would turn to such apps, and they are also using this method on Twitter.

It will be interesting to see the continued rise of anonymity providing apps. They mark a shift in the cultural consciousness surrounding internet usage in lots of ways.

Mobile Gaming Spends to Decline by 2% in 2022

2021 proved to be a watershed year for the mobile gaming industry, but in spite of the fact that this is the case it seems like the inflationary pressures of 2022 are causing significant setbacks that are reversing some of the growth that was seen. Sensor Tower just released a new report that highlights some of these trends with all things having been considered and taken into account.

The pandemic surge brought mobile game spending to new heights, reaching around $22.6 billion in the first quarter of 2021. With all of that having been said and now out of the way, it is important to note that this number has declined year over year for the very first time. In the first quarter of 2022, mobile game spends fell by 6% to $21.2 billion, and a further 6.9% drop in the second quarter brought this number down to just over $20 billion or $20.1 billion to be precise.

The biggest mobile gaming developer by far turned out to be Mid-Core, whose games brought in 60% of the revenue that was seen by the industry in 2022 so far. About half of Mid-Core’s revenue came from RPG games, which makes this the most profitable mobile gaming genre right now. Strategy games are also big earners, coming in second place with 36% of Mid-Core’s revenues for 2022.

The total year over year decline in mobile gaming revenues are expected to be at around 2% according to this report, but it should be noted that Google Play Store’s performance are making these figures worse than might have been the case otherwise. Games on the Google Play Store saw an 8.3% decline in revenues, bringing their total down to $33 billion from $36 billion.

The App Store, on the other hand, saw a bit of growth although it was quite minimal. App Store games saw revenues go from $52 billion in 2021 to $53 billion, so the industry itself might not be in jeopardy here. Rather, it is the Play Store that is skewing the figures and making them seem less positive, and that trend needs to change.

Khaby Lame, the infamous TikToker, wants an Oscar now that he earns $400K per post

Khaby Lame is the most viewed TikToker of the year. His videos have been the center of attention for some while now. With nothing but him acting silently, we are astonished at this guy’s talent. So it is only fair that Lame dares to dream of an Oscar now.

Lame might be the ace at everything else but he certainly lacks one basic skill that is stopping him from winning an Oscar. The guy is great at acting but not so good at speaking English.

Being a Senegalese-born Italian, the guy’s mother tongue naturally isn’t English. That is the reason why Lame struggles with the language so much. On top of that, all of his videos are mute, meaning he does not utter a single word. This is the only explanation for his enormous audience. Gaining such a big audience when you are not even fluent in the most spoken language isn’t a possible task.

It is also quite astonishing how the guy that used to be a factory worker is now earning as much as $400,000 per sponsored post. He recently told Fortune that his ultimate dream is to win an Oscar. Lame isn’t fazed by his striking career and the fact that he is on the track to make about $10 million this year, he wants to aim higher.

Since Lame is focused on getting that Oscar, he is currently practicing to improve his English. He does so by watching a kid’s show, Daniel Tiger, for 3 hours each day.

It is also noteworthy that when mentioning his dream, he did not use ‘I’. Instead, he said ‘I dream that one day we’ll win an Oscar.’ By ‘we’ here, he means himself and his manager ‘Alessandro Riggio’. The guys seem to be joined at the hip as they even share an apartment in Milan by choice.

Lame and Riggio together are working towards big things. For instance, they launched an agency by the name of Iron Corporation. Lame also was spotted at the International Film Festival circuit.

We do believe Lame might be able to achieve his Oscar dream as his acting skills are already up to the mark and he only needs to work on his English. Also, the guy has a pure heart and only wants those around him and seeing him smile.

WordPress Website Digital Marketing Tips

Your WordPress website is pretty versatile, which makes it easier to market than most varieties of website. Just remember that WordPress marketing plugins may not offer the pot of gold they promise in their advertisements. If you are looking to improve your online image and coverage, then work on promoting your website in a more traditional manner. Start with a strong foundation, and then build flourishes into your marketing as your campaigns mature.

Make Sure Your Website is Correctly Optimized

Modern SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is less about following guidelines and rules and is more about creating a useful and popular website. All you need to do is ensure you are not making the sorts of mistakes that drag you down the search engine results. Get in touch with WP Masters and have your website checked over to ensure it can climb freely up the search engine results.

Test Your Landing Pages Along With Their Lead in Links

The easiest way to explain this is to consider an affiliate advertisement and a website landing page. If the website ad says, “Free hot honeys with lots of monies,” then your ad may generate a lot of traffic, but if the landing page is selling lawn mowers, then it is not likely to generate any sales.

On the other hand, if your ad is a very dull, sterile and clinical ad for lawn mowers, then people who click the ad are more likely to buy, but few are likely to actually click the ad in the first place.

Don't let online marketing gurus hoodwink you with notions of more clickable ads or more enticing landing pages. You need to consider where your traffic is coming from and what question they have in mind when they click your link.

What Question is in People’s Mind?

When people click a link to your website or landing page, what question do they have in mind when they click it. Every person who clicks a link has some sort of question in mind. For example, if they see a car advertisement and it has a price on it, they may ask if the price is really as good as the ad says. If somebody is reading a blog on potted plants and the link to your website references nutritious soil, the question is probably about making or buying the soil.

Tone Down Social Media

It really isn't a marketer’s best friend. It is a place for attention, but not really a place to find customers. However, with that said, you need to secure your real name on social media, especially if you have your own brand. If you do not, then when your brand becomes more famous, people will start cloning your name and using your name on their social media accounts. Try to maintain a presence on social media and only test the platforms from time-to-time to see if you can get paying customers. Do not fall into the trap of thinking that social media attention is in some way beneficial if you are not getting paying customers.

Forget Calls to Action

They just don't work. Forced deadlines do not work. Scarcity doesn't work. You need to forget the typical marketing rules and focus on a single selling point and proper branding. Help people understand what your website, your brand, your services and your products are all about. Everybody uses calls to action, forced deadlines, scarcity, and a slew of other sleazy tools to try to make sales. What is so special about that? Do these tactics work on you? Your website and brand needs to separate itself from the others by pushing a big selling point and by educating people on your brand principles.

Lose Pop-Ups

The online stats all say that entry, mid-page and exit pop-ups work. They say they get people engaged, they get more email addresses and so forth. It is all untrue, and if you don't believe it, then try them for a few weeks. Your conversion rate will actually go down. Try to remember the point made above about gimmicks. What is so special about a pop up? Why would a pop up somehow work on your customers when it has never worked on you.

Paying For Results

You should run an affiliate campaign. You should start very small with a very small budget, and you should pay very little per bid and/or per day. Start small because affiliate advertising can easily chew through your budget and give you nothing in return. Paying for affiliate advertising is going to draw in some buyers and paying customers. The problem is that affiliate advertising is very difficult, it takes a lot of time and a lot of testing until you find the right ad and landing page to generate sufficient success. That is why you need to start small so that you don't waste money during those earlier, more costly days.

Google Is Testing Out A Sidebar Feature To Be Added To Its Chrome Browser

Following in Edge’s footsteps, Google is working on adding a sidebar search to the Chrome browser.

Starting any sentence about Google Chrome with the words “following in Edge’s footsteps” is at least a little bit funny to me, since the current version of the said browser is built entirely upon Chromium. However, to be fair, that doesn’t mean that they can’t have a better idea before Google. The tech giant has a near-monopoly on the browser marketplace, they can afford to forget about fresh updates and just let things slide now and then. To be honest, Chrome already has a sidebar-Esque feature on its repertoire; it’s just not as convenient. But to delve into that, we need to first understand what the sidebar search even is.

Sidebar search refers to a feature via which an individual can highlight text in any online article, right-click, and scroll through relevant search results on the right-hand side of that very page. It opens up the default browser as a sidebar, thus the name. Google Chrome, and every browser out there probably, has a similar ability via which right-clicking on highlighted text will give users the option to display relevant search results, but in a separate tab. Having these pop up in the same browser tab, and granting users the ability to scroll through relevant results is just much easier and more convenient for the community at large.

So, how do we know that Google’s working on incorporating this feature into Chrome? Same as we do for every feature in development for the browser: taking a look at Canary. Canary is essentially a test-site version of Chrome via which devs can test out new features before publishing them in the actual mainstream browser, and users can just mess around with unreleased material. A new flag has been introduced to Canary via which users can activate sidebar searches on the platform. It must be noted that not all users can do so, with the feature being doled out to selective users, apparently at random. However, individuals can rest assured that the feature does exist, is being worked on, and will probably show up in a future build of Google Chrome proper.
