Video based content has become a mainstay of many online industries, and there are two main ways in which content can earn money from the videos that they are putting out. The first of these two ways is to earn a portion of the ad revenue that the video will generate, and secondly they can offer paid subscriptions to their loyal followers. Paid subscriptions are often touted as a superior alternative to ad revenue, but in spite of the fact that this is the case ad revenue may be more useful than subscriptions on that front.
Ad revenue from videos totals just under $190 billion in 2022, whereas paid subscriptions only bring in $85 billion with all things having been considered and taken into account. Studies are also showing that ad revenue will grow at a much faster pace, reaching around $360 billion by 2027. By comparison, paid subscription revenue will only grow to about $118 billion in the same timeframe, which suggests that ads are better at driving video revenues than might have been the case otherwise.
It is estimated that the number of digital video viewers worldwide will increase by 350 million between 2022 and 2026. That will result in a 3 point bump from 2022, with around 47.1% of the world projected to regularly watch videos online by 2026. With all of that having been said and now out of the way, it is important to note that ad spending per user will also increase in the interim.
Currently, brands spend about $125 per video viewer. That is likely going to increase to $170 by 2026, which is beneficial because of the fact that this is the sort of thing that could potentially end up allowing content creators to get more money for their hard work.
Paid subscriptions are still advantageous for niche creators who may not be suitable for ads or appealing to brands. The vast majority of content creators will continue to rely on ad revenues, at least for the next decade or so, and it will be interesting to see if anything changes after that.

These App Niches Are the Most Resilient to Economic Headwinds
Inflation as well as supply chain disruptions have caused the formation of economic headwinds which are making it harder for stalwart industries to survive than might have been the case otherwise. In spite of the fact that this is the case, some apps in the mobile market have managed to prove resilient to the effects of inflation and other economic factors, and they are proving that there are still ways in which companies can remain profitable in these trying times.
The mobile market has been especially good at holding the gains that were obtained back in 2020, and with all of that having been said and now out of the way it is important to note that time spent on these apps is increasing, as per DataAI. There has been an 11% increase in average time spent on apps by consumers year over year, and this provides some hope for the future and proves that the app economy still has a lot of room that it can naturally grow into.
Users now spend a whopping 2 trillion hours scrolling through Android apps alone, and download numbers also broke all records with all things having been considered and taken into account. Downloads across both the iOS App Store and the Android Play Store saw a 13% increase year over year to reach 74.4 billion for 2022.
However, revenues are down despite these encouraging numbers. There was a 3% decline in mobile app revenues as compared to last year, which suggests that even though consumers are using apps more and more often, they are not spending quite as much money on them as they used to although that might pick back up again soon.
Some markets are performing a lot better than others, such as in Brazil where consumer spending on purchases within the app increased by 15%. Such news is heartening because of the fact that this is the sort of thing that could potentially end up allowing app developers to start targeting regions where revenue growth is an actual possibility and leave the tougher markets for when the economic climate settles down somewhat.
Short video apps, with TikTok leading the charge, have managed to attain a surprising level of profitability in the current fiscal year. Apps in this category have drastically outperformed other categories, raking in almost $700 million from in app consumer spending alone. Coming in second are OTT apps which crossed the $200 million revenue mark, followed by dating apps, file management apps and finally audio book apps.
Meanwhile, live streaming apps are going through a period of serious turmoil. After being hot items in 2021, they have sustained a loss of about $100 million so far. That casts some doubts on the future of these apps and suggests that they might need to switch things up to keep users pouring in.
Gaming apps have also seen sustained growth in each quarter. MOBA (Multiplayer online battle arena) games are in the lead with profits of around $400 million, but other gaming app categories have performed relatively well too. Team Battle apps that fall into the RPG genre have seen a disappointed few quarters and they have sustained heavy losses of about $400 million or so.

All iPhones Released After The End Of 2024 Will Require USB-C Chargers
For the past year, we’ve been hearing quite a bit of rambling regarding the whole iPhone charging fiasco. And that left many people confused about what the outcome of the situation was going to be.
Now, we’re hearing a final verdict and that entails all iPhones released after December 2024 requiring USB-C charging ports. So you can ditch the standard cables soon and get on the bandwagon for change.
This perspective was first sent out by the European Commission last year in September, right after a number of regulatory parties came up with the conclusion on legislation that became passed in June of this year. The official vote on the matter came in October.
So now, we’ve got a published document that speaks of this matter with a confirmed date on when such charging means are going to be applied as the standard.
In case you did not know, all new electronics which end up using various wired charging means would be needed to adopt the USB-C port. At the same time, different members of the EU have until December of next year to put forward their regulations that enforce the European Union’s directives.
We’d just like to remind you all that this new legislation entails a range of various electronic devices. This includes cellphones, keyboards, tabs, headphones, laptops, earbuds, portable speakers, digital cameras, E-readers, video gaming consoles, and computer mice.
On the other hand, electronics that use wireless solutions for their charging capabilities are obviously exempt and have nothing to worry about.
As one can imagine, this decision will drastically affect the likes of Apple. The leading iPhone maker makes use of proprietary charging standards that use Lightning cables that charge a lot of its devices such as the iPhones. And with such laws in place, it would enforce the adoption of USB-C cables for hardware that’s impacted after December 2024.
But remember, the first batch of Apple devices that use the USB-C might not arrive until the year 2025 and that’s considering the fact that this Cupertino company unleashes new hardware right before December ensues, every single year.
As it is, Apple is facing a major lawsuit in Brazil where the government has banned the sale of iPhones that arrive without charging ports as it feels it’s not fair to make users buy the accessory separately.

Google Chrome Unveils New Dedicated Memory And Energy-Saving Modes For Browsing
Just as you thought Microsoft Edge might not be the most wanted browser of all time, it definitely has a few features that give others tough competition.
This includes the likes of its Sleeping Tabs offering as well as it's Efficiency Mode. It just makes this so much more compelling than a few more mainstream options. Now, we’re hearing more about Chrome providing Edge another run for its money by putting forward some interesting offerings that go head-to-head in this regard.
Think along the lines of dedicated memory and also some modes that entail energy saving for browsers too.
This is Chrome’s latest release and would be up for grabs on all desktop-based platforms as a part of innovative performance settings.
A post that was published on the official blog of Google mentioned how the new settings would pave the way for this browser to use up much less memory. Think along the lines of 40% less and also allowing for smooth running of tabs too.
Similar to the tabs for Sleeping on the Microsoft Edge browser, where around 1.3 billion tabs could be made to sleep, Google Chrome would make use of memory-saving options to freeze up all pages that it deems to be inactive.
Hence, it would enable computers to relocate the memory to more demanding endeavors like edits for videos and gameplay.
The energy-saving feature for Google Chrome would begin to kick in when the device attains the 20% reach for the battery. While the tech giant failed to go into detail with an explainer as to how such features really do work and how effective they turn out to be, one thing is for sure.
You’ll be seeing similar limited background features and activities as well as a reduction in visual effects for webpages having fancy details. So be prepared to say hello to less detailed graphics, simple videos, and limited animations too.
Google knows really well how it can’t make all its consumers happy with a single setting that rules all of them. But what we do know is that there are some great new modes that allow for wonderful customization like the chance to see which websites Google Chrome shouldn’t be put to sleep ever.
For now, it’s definitely going to be super interesting for us to witness various energy savers and memory offerings that enhance the overall performance of the Chrome browser when compared to other competitors in the industry. We look for some follow-ups that shed more light on Microsoft Edge’s tools for power saving. These are outlined to be super effective and it’s going to be interesting how they perform in real-time tests as well.
The feature would be rolled out in the next few weeks so stay tuned.

CEO Of Epic Games Is Willing To Go To The Supreme Court To Battle Apple’s Control Of The App Store
The CEO of Epic Games, Tim Sweeney says he is all set to go to the US Supreme Court to take action against Apple and its monopoly behavior on the App Store.
Sweeney says there is literally no one out there that wishes to see the Open App Markets Act transform into legislation as much as he. And if that does get passed by Congress soon, and the Republicans win in the upcoming elections, it would be great news for him.
In this way, the rule would enable big tech names like Google and Apple to enable developers to distribute applications outside of the respective stores and even make use of in-app payment options too.
This would be a groundbreaking moment for various individuals for obvious reasons as he and many others feel that Apple is doing a fine job at strangling the economy of the digital world today.
But remember, the actual fate of this bill still looms in the court of law. For a while now, so many leading sponsors in the form of senators have been making promises but very little has become true.
What we are seeing is how the tech giants Apple and Google have started to increase their criticism of such laws. It’s come to the point where Tim Cook has made his way to the country’s capital city of Washington DC to meet with leading lawmakers and put an end to the thought of such legislation as well.
Ever since we saw Epic file a mega lawsuit against both these leading tech firms and blasting them for breaking antitrust violations in the year 2020, Sweeney was constantly in the same league as them. He managed to throw darts at two gatekeepers seen on the Twitter app. Most of his posts are directly aimed at Apple and his last one went out calling the firm a huge menace that prevents freedom from taking place around the globe.
On Wednesday, we saw a tweet of his pop-up regarding the subject too.
The first part of the conversation had to do with an argument related to this App Store and how its priority was now linked to business implications only. There were a lot of complaints related to the tech giant’s dominance in the market during a period when antitrust was trending among so many Democrats. Today, Republicans are speaking out against Apple and Sweeney is joining them as the company’s stronghold on iOS apps being distributed is a menace in society.
Seeing Apple go as far as rejecting leading digital apps like Twitter is a huge issue that all politicians need to understand. Apple is indirectly determining who is going to say what and Elon Musk was not wrong to call out Apple and ask if they’re against the realm of free speech. Apple did threaten that it could ban Twitter from its App Store soon, even though Cook says it’s not like that.

Amazon To Launch TikTok-Like Shopping Experience On Its Platform
Amazon is very keen on introducing a new feature called Inspire that’s designed to be similar in design to shopping on TikTok.
The corporation announced the launch of its Inspire today that’s a type of short-form video and image feed that enables consumers to go through products and ideas and then shop via content that influencers, brands, and other users promote.
The whole purpose is to get consumers to leave apps like TikTok and turn to Amazon for such shopping experiences. This way, businesses would be given the chance to promote brands directly so as to achieve direct sales from the Amazon website.
The retailer went on to say in this shopping endeavor how the idea is to put forward the offering to a few consumers in the US during the early part of this month. And after seeing how things go, it should be further expanded to users in America in the following months.
This launch is similar to trials that occur during the early part of this year when the company was seen carrying out experiments that included a shopping button very similar in design to the TikTok app.
This event had a separate button for navigation and it was located toward the bottom of the app for Amazon mobile.
Meanwhile, in this particular version that’s getting launched right now, the navigation button’s placement is still the same and is present at the top. But there is a difference in the light bulb icon that’s present instead of the diamond icon that’s seen in tests.
If users wish to begin using this Inspire, consumers would be required to open up this Amazon Shopping application and then click on the icon for Inspire. After launching it, users would be prompted select from more than 20 interests, and that entailed items like makeup, skincare, and some pets. You also have travel, interior, running, and some more included to help make this feed a tad bit more personalized than usual.
At the moment, it appears that the new venture is focusing more on the likes of content that’s the short form in design. But you’ll be amazed to learn how it even provides support for images, making it a hybrid between the likes of both TikTok and Instagram. And similar to the latter, you can even double-click anywhere located on the screen to press Like and cover the content with red hearts.
Scrolling through the new feature is like going through the TikTok app’s feed that’s designed for vertical video. There are some engagement buttons that are located on the screen’s right side like TikTok.
Whenever a user feels they’ve witnessed something that they like, they can click on buttons at the bottom of windows which links products to Amazon. When you tap, buttons would pop up across products in overlay windows that are seen on the top of videos. Once you press on the feature entailing See All Details, that is when you’re transferred directly to the product page to read more, buy, and even add the product to your list.
You can find this feature on the Amazon mobile app for both iOS and Android users but it’s only available to a selected few for now.
