AI Revolution Reshapes Work and Home, Accelerates Faster Than Any Previous Technology

A new research by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, Vanderbilt University, and Harvard Kennedy School finds the true extent of AI filtration in our daily lives. The research found five key takeaways by surveying thousands of US workers to see how AI adoption is happening at work and at home.

The research found that generative AI has been adopted faster than any other new technology in the past. 39.4% of Americans between the ages of 18-64 have reported using ChatGPT. It’s been only two years since the release of ChatGPT and it has crossed 30% adoption rate while PCs took three years to hit 20% adoption rate. It is probably due to the cost difference between AI and PC. The adoption of AI at home isn't that costly but PCs used to cost a large amount.

AI adoption outpaces PCs: 39.4% of US adults use ChatGPT, surpassing 30% in two years.

Another finding by the research showed that AI is being used by everyone and not just tech workers. It is most commonly being adopted in business, management and computer related fields and the usage rate has already surpassed 40%. As PC adoption resulted in workplace inequality, AI adoption is also increasing inequality at workplaces. 60% of workers with bachelor's degrees are using AI as compared to 20% of workers without a degree. The researchers say that this could lead to inequalities in the labor market.

Artificial Intelligence is also saving a lot of time in a number of tasks. 57% of respondents are using AI for writing and 49% are using it for searching for information. AI is also saving employees time by summarizing their reports and generating new ideas. The research also talked about how AI can report user productivity but it is still in its early stages. Currently, 0.5% and 3.5% of all US work hours are being assisted by AI and they increase the labor productivity up to 0.125% and 0.875%. Researchers say that we cannot assume anything right now because AI is still in the early stages of its adoption and it will take some time for it to be completely adopted in workforces.

AI saves time: 57% use it for writing, 49% for research, enhancing productivity in daily tasks.

Is Google Giving YouTube Unfair Advantage? AI Overviews See Huge Spike in Citations

As per the new findings from the BrightEdge, YouTube citations grew by 310% in Google AI Overviews (AIO) in August and 200% in September.

The reason for such a high surge is that Google is self-preferencing YouTube, a property they own. Another reason is that using Google’s Gemini multimodal model can cite created content in spoken form into generated AI answers.

Besides that, Google’s AIO trends related to shopping and e-commerce were also shared by the BrightEdge SEO platform. There was a 7% drop in shopping keywords from 12.4%, which were the organic search ranking and AIO citations. Nonetheless, the ranking of overall keywords remained in the top 10 and saw an increase from 21.6% in July to 24.5% in September.

The AIO E-commerce queries dropped to 7.63% from 12.04%. But the most significant increase was for unordered collapsed lists for shopping as it went up from 1.3% to 15.9%. At the same time, the volatility for shopping queries fell from 37% to 26%, and the E-commerce AIO height increased from 651 pixels to 914 pixels which is 40.4%.

The changes happened for a reason for queries related to E-commerce, there is a greater focus on supplemental information by Google’s AI Overview. Additionally, since the holidays are coming for Christmas and New Year’s Eve, there is an increase in stabilization so that the optimization efforts are consistent.

There have always been debates about whether AI can compete with the human brain or not. Some people think that it can but Yann LeCun, Meta’s chief AI scientist, says that it's not possible. He says that they can make AI come close to the human brain in ten years only by using a method called “world model”. OpenAI has already released a new feature on ChatGPT called “Memories” that makes the AI model remember all of the conversations. OpenAI says that the model they used for it, o1, can also make AI capable of complex reasoning.

Even though it seems like we are closer to general artificial intelligence (AGI), LeCun says that we have a long way to go to achieve it. He said that even though there are many AI optimists claiming that human-like AI is closer, it is still going to take a lot of time. He added that the latest large language models like MetaAI and ChatGPT are still far from human-level AI. The reason for this is obvious. Most large language models are one dimensional which means that they can predict things in just one way and cannot understand the three dimensional world.

This is the reason AI models cannot do tasks a human can. AIs are not reliable in the physical world because they cannot even do simple tasks even if they are trained on millions of data. LeCun suggests that building a three dimensional world, Work Models, for AI can be a solution. He described the world model as a mental model of how you perceive a world behaving. Try to understand it with an example of a dirty room. When a human looks at a dirty room, he makes a mental image of what he has to do to clean it. Your brain looks at the space in three dimensions and creates a plan to achieve the goal of cleaning the room.

This is what the AI world model is trying to achieve and a world model can also take more data than LLMs. Many AI labs are chasing this idea and trying to start their work on it. LeCun says that Meta AI research lab, FAIR (Fundamental AI Research), is also working towards this idea. LeCun says that it isn't easy to achieve and there are a lot of complicated things they would have to work with. So, it's probably going to take a lot of years.

Survey: 40% of Small Businesses Now Using AI, With Marketing and Customer Insights Leading

According to a new research by the US Chamber of Commerce, there has been a 17% increase in small businesses using AI in 2024 from 2023. In 2023, 23% of the small businesses were using AI but now 40% of small businesses have integrated AI into their workspaces. This survey was based on 1,100 people working as small businesses in the US.

Upon asking what purposes these small businesses are using AI for, 51% said they use it for marketing and promoting purposes. 56% said so in 2023, marking a 5% decline this year. Marketing and promoting was still the top purpose for using AI in 2023 as well as 2024.

46% of small businesses are also using AI for developing customer insights, a 14% up from 32% in 2023. 41% of small businesses are also using AI for communicating with their customers. There has also been a 10% increase seen in usage of AI for managing customer relationships in 2024 (38%) from 2023 (28%).

The top AI enabled tools small businesses in the US are using are search engines (63%), social media (61%) and email services (58%). Financial management tools (51%), digital cameras on smartphones (46%) and computer virus detection and cybersecurity tools (44%) are also some AI enabled tools used by small businesses in 2024 .

31% of the US small businesses have been using AI for more than a year, with 12% using it for three to four years. 27% of the small businesses have started the use of AI just this year. 60% of the respondents of the survey also said that they believe that AI can help their business in the future. 5% also think that AI can hurt their business in the future.
