Consumers Spent $16.2 Billion on Apps in September 2024; App Store Generated $13.7 Billion Revenue

Most of the app developers ask whether they should build on Google Play Store (Android) or Apple App Store (iOS), and the answer depends on what you are building. The revenue on these two platforms also matter. AppFigures compared the revenue of Google Play and App Store in September 2024 to find out how much revenue is consistent on these platforms. The most important thing to know is that the App Store gets the most revenue (84%) as compared to Google Play (16%).

Consumers spent approximately $16.2 billion on Google Play and App Store in September 2024. Google Play got $2.5 billion and App Store got $13.7 billion. This is all gross revenue which means that these are in-app purchases before Google and Apple took their fees. So, if anyone wants the money, the App Store is the right choice.

Games category gets the most revenue, $5.1 billion on the App Store and Google Play. App Store got $3.9 billion revenue, which makes 75% of the total revenue. A fun fact is that the Gaming category has the smallest share of revenue after the Shopping category. The top five categories in terms of total spend are Lifestyle & Dating, Social Networking, Photo & Video and Entertainment. So if you are an app developer and want to earn revenue, these five categories on the App Store are the best.

ChatGPT Might Be Top Dog, But These AI Apps Are Snatching Up Profits!

When someone mentions AI app or AI chatbot, ChatGPT is the first thing that comes to mind, and that explains why it saw huge revenue growth in Q3 of 2024. Even though ChatGPT is the biggest platform in terms of revenue growth, it isn't the only one that is seeing incredible revenue growth. AppFigures’ analysis highlights the impressive revenue growth of Claude, CoPilot, and Perplexity across the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. (Sorry Google lovers, Gemini wasn't included in the analysis).

If we talk about Claude, CoPilot and Perplexity collectively, they have already gotten $13.3 million in revenue from January 2024 to September 2024. An important thing to note is that CoPilot didn't start earning until May 2024 and Claude was launched in May 2024. The consumers spent a total of $2.8 million on this trio in September 2024.

CoPilot is catching up on its revenue and is not far behind Perplexity. This year, all three AI models have started getting double digit revenue every month. According to the estimates by AppFigures, the total revenue of Claude, CoPilot and Perplexity chatbots was increased 11% in September 2024. Even though the growth of this trio is incredible, Claude is still seeing the highest revenue growth. It gained 22% month over month revenue in September 2024, while Perplexity got 10% and CoPilot got 1% month over month revenue.

In terms of total spend, Claude comes last at $2.4 million. Perplexity got $3.7 million and CoPilot got $3.6 million. As compared to these three, ChatGPT’s spend is 15 times more every month. But as the trends are changing, the future of search is also going to change. Perplexity is catching up fast so we have to see which AI model will become Google of this era.

AI Revolution Reshapes Work and Home, Accelerates Faster Than Any Previous Technology

A new research by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, Vanderbilt University, and Harvard Kennedy School finds the true extent of AI filtration in our daily lives. The research found five key takeaways by surveying thousands of US workers to see how AI adoption is happening at work and at home.

The research found that generative AI has been adopted faster than any other new technology in the past. 39.4% of Americans between the ages of 18-64 have reported using ChatGPT. It’s been only two years since the release of ChatGPT and it has crossed 30% adoption rate while PCs took three years to hit 20% adoption rate. It is probably due to the cost difference between AI and PC. The adoption of AI at home isn't that costly but PCs used to cost a large amount.

AI adoption outpaces PCs: 39.4% of US adults use ChatGPT, surpassing 30% in two years.

Another finding by the research showed that AI is being used by everyone and not just tech workers. It is most commonly being adopted in business, management and computer related fields and the usage rate has already surpassed 40%. As PC adoption resulted in workplace inequality, AI adoption is also increasing inequality at workplaces. 60% of workers with bachelor's degrees are using AI as compared to 20% of workers without a degree. The researchers say that this could lead to inequalities in the labor market.

Artificial Intelligence is also saving a lot of time in a number of tasks. 57% of respondents are using AI for writing and 49% are using it for searching for information. AI is also saving employees time by summarizing their reports and generating new ideas. The research also talked about how AI can report user productivity but it is still in its early stages. Currently, 0.5% and 3.5% of all US work hours are being assisted by AI and they increase the labor productivity up to 0.125% and 0.875%. Researchers say that we cannot assume anything right now because AI is still in the early stages of its adoption and it will take some time for it to be completely adopted in workforces.

AI saves time: 57% use it for writing, 49% for research, enhancing productivity in daily tasks.

Is Google Giving YouTube Unfair Advantage? AI Overviews See Huge Spike in Citations

As per the new findings from the BrightEdge, YouTube citations grew by 310% in Google AI Overviews (AIO) in August and 200% in September.

The reason for such a high surge is that Google is self-preferencing YouTube, a property they own. Another reason is that using Google’s Gemini multimodal model can cite created content in spoken form into generated AI answers.

Besides that, Google’s AIO trends related to shopping and e-commerce were also shared by the BrightEdge SEO platform. There was a 7% drop in shopping keywords from 12.4%, which were the organic search ranking and AIO citations. Nonetheless, the ranking of overall keywords remained in the top 10 and saw an increase from 21.6% in July to 24.5% in September.

The AIO E-commerce queries dropped to 7.63% from 12.04%. But the most significant increase was for unordered collapsed lists for shopping as it went up from 1.3% to 15.9%. At the same time, the volatility for shopping queries fell from 37% to 26%, and the E-commerce AIO height increased from 651 pixels to 914 pixels which is 40.4%.

The changes happened for a reason for queries related to E-commerce, there is a greater focus on supplemental information by Google’s AI Overview. Additionally, since the holidays are coming for Christmas and New Year’s Eve, there is an increase in stabilization so that the optimization efforts are consistent.

Meta’s LeCun: General AI Still Distant, World Models Key to Progress

There have always been debates about whether AI can compete with the human brain or not. Some people think that it can but Yann LeCun, Meta’s chief AI scientist, says that it's not possible. He says that they can make AI come close to the human brain in ten years only by using a method called “world model”. OpenAI has already released a new feature on ChatGPT called “Memories” that makes the AI model remember all of the conversations. OpenAI says that the model they used for it, o1, can also make AI capable of complex reasoning.

Image: Hudson Forum / YT

Even though it seems like we are closer to general artificial intelligence (AGI), LeCun says that we have a long way to go to achieve it. He said that even though there are many AI optimists claiming that human-like AI is closer, it is still going to take a lot of time. He added that the latest large language models like MetaAI and ChatGPT are still far from human-level AI. The reason for this is obvious. Most large language models are one dimensional which means that they can predict things in just one way and cannot understand the three dimensional world.

This is the reason AI models cannot do tasks a human can. AIs are not reliable in the physical world because they cannot even do simple tasks even if they are trained on millions of data. LeCun suggests that building a three dimensional world, Work Models, for AI can be a solution. He described the world model as a mental model of how you perceive a world behaving. Try to understand it with an example of a dirty room. When a human looks at a dirty room, he makes a mental image of what he has to do to clean it. Your brain looks at the space in three dimensions and creates a plan to achieve the goal of cleaning the room.

This is what the AI world model is trying to achieve and a world model can also take more data than LLMs. Many AI labs are chasing this idea and trying to start their work on it. LeCun says that Meta AI research lab, FAIR (Fundamental AI Research), is also working towards this idea. LeCun says that it isn't easy to achieve and there are a lot of complicated things they would have to work with. So, it's probably going to take a lot of years.

WhatsApp To Soon Launch New Chat Memory Feature For Meta AI

Meta AI is getting more enhanced features including a new chat memory for WhatsApp.

The news comes after Mark Zuckerberg confirmed adding a more personalized voice chat mode for the app. This seems to be in line with just that as revealed in the latest WhatsApp Beta for Android, as per WBI.

The goal appears to be giving users a more tailored experience when asking for queries through the platform. This would make it specific and relevant to users, depending on what the chatbot retains from their chat experience.

Remember, Meta AI can recall a long list of personal details like if users are vegan or when their birthday falls or even for situations that are more specific like formal conversations or tone of speaking. Similarly, AI can remember the users’ interests, likes, and enjoyment of all things entertainment.

This kind of memory feature can better AI interactions on Meta in terms of giving the best advice and replies which go hand in hand with users’ lifestyles. Hence, the next time you need help with what to eat or what color to wear, this might be your go-to gadget.

Experts feel such kinds of customization give rise to natural and engaging conversations, giving the app a more personalized AI assistant. Users will ensure full control over what the chatbot recalls and they can select when to remove and update certain data.

For now, the feature is still under development but it’s going to be up for grabs in another future update. We’ll keep an eye out and let you know when tat happens and when more details are released.

How To Pick Your Next Laptop?

When it comes to picking your next laptop, the options can seem overwhelming with so many models and brands available. However, with the right approach, you can find the perfect laptop that suits your needs without breaking the bank. Whether you're after something for work, entertainment, or a bit of both, there are plenty of ways to make an informed decision. And if you're looking for deals, don't forget to check out Laptop Outlet discount vouchers at Latest Deals for savings on a range of top brands.

1. Identify Your Needs

The first step to picking the right laptop is understanding what you need it for. Different users have different priorities:

  • Students may need a lightweight laptop with enough power for research, writing essays, and streaming content.
  • Professionals might need a more robust device that can handle multitasking, video conferencing, and specific software for productivity.
  • Gamers often look for laptops with high-end graphics cards and powerful processors to run the latest games smoothly.
  • Creative professionals such as designers and video editors will want a laptop with high-resolution displays and powerful hardware to handle demanding tasks.

By pinpointing your primary use, you can focus on the laptops that meet your specific requirements.

2. Choose Between Mac and Windows (or Even Chromebook)

The next major decision is the operating system. Your choice will depend on your comfort level with the software and the ecosystem you’re already using.
  • Windows laptops are versatile and available in a wide range of prices. They’re compatible with a variety of software and are ideal for general use, gaming, and professional applications.
  • MacBooks, powered by macOS, are known for their sleek design and excellent performance. They tend to be more expensive but are popular among creative professionals and users who enjoy a streamlined, secure system.
  • Chromebooks run on Google’s Chrome OS and are typically more affordable. They’re perfect for basic tasks such as browsing the internet, using cloud-based apps, and media consumption.

Deciding which operating system best aligns with your needs will help narrow down your choices.

3. Consider Performance: Processor, RAM, and Storage

Image: Unsplash / tanit boonruen

When it comes to performance, three key factors come into play: the processor, the amount of RAM, and storage options.
  • Processor (CPU): The CPU is the brain of your laptop. Intel and AMD are the two leading processor manufacturers. Intel Core i5 or i7 processors are great for general multitasking and performance, while AMD Ryzen processors offer similar performance at a typically lower cost. For heavy tasks like gaming or video editing, you might want a more powerful CPU such as Intel Core i9 or AMD Ryzen 9.
  • RAM: Random Access Memory (RAM) determines how much multitasking your laptop can handle. For general use, 8GB of RAM is sufficient, but if you’re into gaming, video editing, or heavy multitasking, 16GB or more is ideal.
  • Storage: You'll need to choose between a Hard Disk Drive (HDD) and a Solid-State Drive (SSD). SSDs are faster, quieter, and more durable, but they tend to be more expensive. If speed is a priority, opt for an SSD. A minimum of 256GB of storage is standard for most users, but if you deal with large files, you may need more.

4. Pay Attention to Display and Graphics

If you’ll be spending long hours looking at your laptop screen, the display quality is important. For general use, a Full HD (1920x1080) display will suffice. However, if you’re into photo editing, graphic design, or gaming, you might want to consider a higher resolution (like 4K) and colour accuracy.

For gamers and creative professionals, graphics cards also matter. Integrated graphics (found in most laptops) are fine for basic use, but for gaming or video editing, a dedicated GPU such as an NVIDIA GeForce or AMD Radeon is a better choice.

5. Battery Life Matters

If you're on the go, battery life is critical. The advertised battery life doesn’t always reflect real-world usage, so look for laptops with solid reviews from users with similar needs. For general use, aim for 8-10 hours of battery life, but if you need more, some ultrabooks offer up to 15 hours or more.

6. Portability: Size and Weight

Laptop sizes vary from ultra-portable 11-inch models to larger 17-inch models. While larger screens are great for entertainment and multitasking, smaller laptops are ideal if you need to travel frequently. A balance of portability and functionality is found in 13- to 15-inch laptops, which are light enough to carry but still offer sufficient screen real estate.

7. Connectivity and Ports

Think about the types of ports you’ll need. If you use a lot of external devices like USB drives, external monitors, or memory cards, you’ll need a laptop with multiple ports, such as USB-A, USB-C, HDMI, and an SD card slot. Some laptops, like the MacBook, only feature USB-C ports, so you may need adapters.

8. Budget and Discounts

Lastly, your budget will largely influence the laptop you choose. Fortunately, there’s a laptop for every price range. Entry-level models start around £300, while high-end laptops can go well beyond £1,000. The trick is to find the right balance of features and price.

And don’t forget about saving money! Laptop Outlet discount vouchers at Latest Deals can help you find great deals on a wide range of laptops, whether you're looking for a budget-friendly option or something more high-end.

Picking your next laptop doesn't have to be daunting. By focusing on your primary use, performance requirements, portability, and budget, you can find a laptop that fits your needs perfectly.
