Meta Curtails Internal Criticism Linked to Appointment of Dana White To its Board of Directors

Tech giant Meta is working to curtain criticism it received within its own company after CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s shocking decision to add Dana White to its board of directors.

As reported by 404 Media recently, the company was left with no choice but to delete an array of comments that were left behind by its own employees on Workplace. The latter is the name given to a place that only employees of Facebook can access.

Many comments had to do with video footage from the past that displayed Dana White using violence against his own wife at an NYE party. Other than that, the fact that he’s always been a pro-Trump supporter and a very outspoken one had some people stunned.

Even though he was never charged for the abuse caught on camera, employees feel his leading position on the board was nothing less than a joke. One worker stated ‘W’ white another questioned the motives behind the shocking appointment. Let’s not forget how he’s a known UFC fighter who was found guilty of assault by a civil court after one woman accused him of abuse in 2018.

Others were not so happy with the company’s decision and the array of celebratory comments published by a few colleagues. Some went as far as to express dismay about the fact that he was caught on camera assaulting a woman and yet others were too busy congratulating him.
Some went as far as to claim that people were so naive to not know his background and if they did, they chose to ignore the truth as they feared for their jobs in the company. They slammed Meta for the act who supposed his assault behavior by appointing him a leading position.

At the start, Meta and Google became some popular spots for enabling free discussions. They thought it would be in the firm’s favor. Today, it’s a whole different scenario where such criticism can really harm the company’s image as it is right now. We’ve previously seen people protesting on different issues.

On multiple occasions, Meta was left with no choice but to step in and remind employees that while their opinions were certainly respected, this was a place to be respectful. They were reminded to communicate better and think twice before commenting on internal matters such as those about board members.

Meta Shifts to Community-Driven Content Moderation, Abandoning Fact-Checking Program

Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, announced sweeping changes to the company’s approach to content moderation, marking a significant shift in how Facebook, Instagram, and Threads handle free speech and misinformation. In a video post on Facebook, Zuckerberg detailed plans to dismantle Meta’s longstanding fact-checking program, which relied on third-party organizations, and replace it with a community-driven system inspired by X’s Community Notes. The move reflects a growing push for transparency and a return to simpler, less restrictive policies that prioritize user input over institutional oversight.

Zuckerberg acknowledged that the decision was influenced by both political and cultural shifts, particularly surrounding elections. He criticized governments and legacy media outlets for what he called increasing demands for censorship. He noted, “Recent elections feel like a cultural tipping point, pushing us to prioritize speech again.” The changes, he emphasized, would aim to reduce errors in moderation while restoring a sense of free expression across Meta’s platforms.

The company’s decision to abandon its fact-checking program marks the end of a system that began in 2016. This program enlisted more than 90 certified organizations, including PolitiFact and Factcheck.org, to review content in over 60 languages. Fact-checkers labeled posts with ratings such as “False,” “Partly False,” or “Missing Context,” and content deemed misleading was pushed lower in users’ feeds. However, critics often argued that the system was politically biased, with some claiming it unfairly targeted conservative viewpoints. Zuckerberg now contends that such complex systems have led to too many mistakes, silencing millions of posts unintentionally. “Even if only 1% of posts are wrongly flagged, that’s millions of people affected,” he said.

Under the new system, Meta will focus on “high-severity violations” related to issues like drugs, terrorism, and child exploitation, while relying on users to report other types of infractions. Automated moderation will be tuned to require greater confidence before removing content, a trade-off Zuckerberg acknowledged could allow more harmful posts to remain online. However, he stressed that the goal was to balance free expression with responsible oversight, minimizing harm without excessive censorship.

The company is also restructuring its moderation teams, moving its trust and safety division from California to Texas. This shift, Zuckerberg explained, is part of a broader effort to streamline operations and refocus resources. Additionally, Meta plans to reverse earlier policies that limited the presence of political content in user feeds. Over the past several years, the company reduced the visibility of such posts in response to complaints that they caused stress and divisiveness. Now, Zuckerberg believes the public appetite for civic discourse has returned, saying, “We’re entering a new era where people want to engage with this content again.”

Meta’s changes come amidst broader debates about the role of social media in shaping public discourse. Conservatives have long criticized the company’s moderation policies as favoring liberal perspectives, a claim Meta has disputed. The introduction of X’s Community Notes, a similar system created by Elon Musk, has been celebrated by some as a model for transparency and community participation. Zuckerberg’s announcement appears to align with this trend, signaling a shift toward decentralized moderation.
Meta’s pivot also involves a closer relationship with the incoming Trump administration. The company has pledged to collaborate with the U.S. government to counter global efforts to suppress free speech. Zuckerberg highlighted the challenges posed by international crackdowns on digital platforms, arguing that the only way to combat these trends is with strong support from the U.S. “Governments worldwide are increasingly targeting American companies, pushing for censorship,” he said. “We need the U.S. government to stand with us to push back.”

The announcement underscores a broader recalibration of Meta’s role in the digital landscape. Over the past decade, the company has faced intense scrutiny over its moderation policies, particularly following the 2016 election. Efforts to combat misinformation and foreign interference led to increased cooperation between Meta and U.S. agencies like the FBI, but these interactions have since become a focal point of conservative criticism. Republican lawmakers have launched investigations into whether government pressure influenced social media companies to suppress certain viewpoints, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite the controversies, Zuckerberg appears committed to charting a new course for Meta. He praised Elon Musk’s handling of X, describing it as a bold experiment in free speech, even as the two tech leaders occasionally clash. With these changes, Meta hopes to reclaim its reputation as a platform for open dialogue while addressing the challenges of moderating a global community of billions.

Google Chrome Testing Feature to Share Specific PDF Sections via Links

A new Google Chrome feature was spotted by a user on X through a Chromium code commit that shows users might be able to send specific parts of long pdfs so others can access it easily. It is hard when you have to send a whole pdf to someone just for a specific part because you have to go through it from the start to reach there. Through this feature, users will be able to select a text on the pdf and copy its link to send to someone. When someone clicks on the link, it will take them to that specific part of the pdf.

This feature is just for testing right now so we are not sure when it will be available to all users. The steps to create a link for specific parts of a pdf are simple. On the PDF viewer on Google Chrome, just select the text you want to share the link of and then open right click menu/option. Now select the ‘copy link to highlight’ and share the link to whomever you want (just like web page text highlighting feature). This upgraded PDF part highlighting feature is named as Text Fragment and using this feature, everyone will be able to access exactly what they need in a pdf.

Google is working on other features too like scam detection with AI and improving tab grouping. Gemini Live is going to be integrated on Chrome too.

OpenAI Struggles as ChatGPT Pro’s Popularity Causes Unexpected Financial Losses

OpenAI’s ChatGPT Pro plan, priced at $200 per month, was supposed to be a win for the company. Instead, it’s proving to be a financial headache. Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, recently admitted that the plan is losing money. The problem? People are using it far more than expected. What seemed like a solid revenue stream is now a reminder of how hard it is to balance ambition with reality.

The Pro plan promised near-unlimited access to cutting-edge tools, appealing to power users willing to pay the steep price. But with demand soaring, the costs of running the service are outpacing the revenue it brings in. Despite this setback, OpenAI isn’t backing down. The company is eyeing new ways to stabilize its finances, including potential price increases for its most popular plans.

For years, OpenAI has walked a tricky line between innovation and profitability. It has raised billions and seen massive user growth, but profits remain elusive. Running large-scale AI systems like ChatGPT isn’t cheap, with daily costs climbing to hundreds of thousands of dollars during peak periods. Even after generating significant revenue, the company continues to face losses in the billions.

To turn things around, OpenAI is rethinking its approach. A pivot to a more aggressive for-profit structure is on the horizon. This could involve new partnerships, monetizing free-tier services, and possibly introducing ads. OpenAI is betting that these moves could help it reach ambitious revenue targets in the years to come.

Meanwhile, users are left to weigh their options. If the price of ChatGPT Pro climbs even higher, alternatives like Google Gemini might gain traction. Gemini offers many of the same features for less and is praised for its ease of use. Still, ChatGPT’s unmatched capabilities in areas like research and logic keep it at the forefront, even as users debate whether the price is worth it.

OpenAI’s story is one of big dreams and bigger challenges. The company is chasing a vision of what AI can be, but the path to profitability remains as complex as the technology it creates.

Challenges are temporary, but the pride of achieving your dreams will last forever. You started this journey for a reason—finish it for that same reason."

OpenAI Turns Its Focus To Superintelligence To Accelerate Scientific Discovery

OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman shared a personal blog about the company’s future goals, which will entail superintelligence.

Altman did not shy away from confirming that the makers of ChatGPT are experts in designing AI but their new focus is bringing superintelligence into the world. This came with reassurance about using it to improve scientific discovery and create innovative offerings. As a result, it could massively enhance abundance with prosperity.

While it’s not a plan that’s envisioned to come into play anytime soon, he did hint at how we could be thousands of days away from its arrival. Also, the intensity would be a lot, he continued.

While artificial general intelligence or AGI has a fixed definition, the tech giant likes to define it on its own terms and conditions. This includes how autonomous it is in terms of outperforming mankind at cost-effective tasks. Other companies like top investor and software giant Microsoft provide its own definition of AGI which is a system generating profits that go up to $100B.

Let’s not forget to mention that when and if OpenAI does attain this figure, it will restrict access to its tech as per a contract it signed with Microsoft. Now it’s not yet a certain definition the OpenAI CEO referred to in this case but it’s clear what the company’s focus is looking like in the near future.

AI agents are in the pipeline to join the company and carry out specific tasks autonomously. This could drastically alter outputs for some leading firms in the upcoming year.

Altman shared how he continuously believes in putting good tools in the hands of great leaders to ensure incomes get distributed widely. Now experts do see that as a major possibility but we must mention that AI tech in today’s time is very limited. Problems are on the rise such as hallucination, obvious errors, and costly technology.

Sam Altman is confident that all of this will overcome the hurdles and hopefully soon. Again, nothing can be predicted when we think about AI as seen in the past. Timelines could alter to a great extent.

We do believe in the next few years, people will envision our goals and act carefully, Altman explained. The number of possibilities at stake for OpenAI makes it far away from the norms of a regular company. Now the world does feel the statements coming from the CEO are promising but safety is always questionable.

To act responsibly and allocate necessary resources to meet goals while not compromising user safety and privacy is a lot of work. So as you can expect, superintelligence comes with a lot of risk.

We’ve seen the company share on several occasions how it wants a successful transition to superintelligence. But it does know that nothing is guaranteed and nothing comes easy. They’re still in the phase of trying to figure things out. As per the blog, the AI giant has a solution in place to stop things from going wrong.

Ever since this post was published, the company has disbanded teams. These were focused on matters like AI safety such as superintelligent systems. There have been so many leading researchers known for safety-driven designs and visions who left the company. Moreover, many did cite the cause of departure being the overly ambitious goals of the tech giant. This includes current work that entails corporate restructuring to attract greater investors.

Altman is fighting critics who feel the firm doesn’t keep safety as its top agenda. His response is to see the past track record and then decide.

OpenAI aims for superintelligence, promising scientific breakthroughs, but must navigate technical, ethical, and safety challenges.
