SitePoint Ambassador of the Month: March 2016

It feels like yesterday when the SitePoint Ambassadors program kicked off. Hard to believe we’ve arrived at our 5th month!

We’re honored to pass the torch of Ambassador of the Month to someone who—though he works tirelessly by day at his day job—manages to spend quality time with the SitePoint community. It’s our friendly neighbor from Greece, Panayiotis Velisarakos!

Panayiotis Velisarakos

Panayiotis has been working in and around the Web for almost twenty years, using a variety of front-end and back-end technologies, tools and platforms. His strength nowadays is focused very much on front-end development and building great-looking sites.

Panayiotis mentioned to us that, if you sit still, web technologies will just pass you by. This is why he dedicates so much time to refining his skills: his love of books and blogs keeps him very busy!

During the rare few moments Panayiotis isn’t focused on web things, he is happily relaxing with his family (and occasionally playing games online).

We asked Panayiotis to tell us a bit more about his interactions with SitePoint. Here’s what he had to say:

SitePoint has always been one of the few sites I visited daily. I’ve loved reading the new articles and expanding my web knowledge. I would check back continually to look for new books and resources on SitePoint Premium to help me expand my skill set.

Keeping up-to-date with advancements in web technologies would be very difficult without communities like SitePoint. I really enjoy devoting as much free time as I can to support them.

The Ambassador program was an opportunity for me to contribute to the web community in a meaningful way. Letting me reach a wider audience and make the best of the time and effort I could spare.

Why thank you! It’s good to know the program has proved useful for SitePoint contributors, and we’re looking forward to the continued development of the program. With people like Panayiotis, I’m sure this will be a great journey.

Watch out this space!

A Quick Guide to the WordPress Customizer Interface

Themes let you customize every aspect of the design and functionality of a WordPress site. But what if you want to let your client customize some aspect of the theme? Perhaps you want to sell a theme on Envato Market and you want to let buyers adjust the color scheme and logo to match their brand.

That's where the WordPress theme Customizer comes in. By making your theme Customizer-ready, you let site owners instantly change their website look and feel from within the WordPress admin UI.

In this short video tutorial from my recent course on writing Customizer-ready WordPress themes, I’ll demonstrate the Customizer interface. I’ll show you the default controls that come with WordPress, and then go through examples of different controls that you could add (the actual process of adding them is covered later in the course).

In the full course, Writing Customizer-Ready WordPress Themes, I’ll teach you how to harness the power of the Customizer in your themes. We'll add all of those extra sections that you just saw previewed in this video, with detailed instructions to help you get everything set up. You'll see how easy it is to let users of your theme customize the color scheme of their site and add elements like logos and text.

2015 was another mega year for the One Page website. Did you know we reviewed 601 unique One Page websites in 2015!

Below are our Top 20 picks out of the 64 One Pagers we awarded “Most Loved” last year. It was difficult narrowing this down and there is no ranking order but each is given a reason why we think it was worthy of a Top 20 placement.

Factors that influenced our decisions were mainly the quality of the One Page website but there are one or two we have included due to the huge amount of social sharing they received – an obvious indication of our reader appreciation. The round up was such a nostalgic and humbling experience – long live the One Page website!

Hope you enjoy,
Rob

Bia Costa (Portfolio, Résumé)

Bia Costa

Portugal based software engineer, Bia Costa, brings us the most interactive (and awesome) One Page resume we’ve seen this year. It all starts off with a classic “film” intro followed by a UFO dropping off Bia as “Ghost Boo” – the main ghost character. You can then visit the museum to check out his study and employment history, continue to the supermarket to visualise his skills using shelved items, visit the cemetery (with a spotlight) to see his archived projects, rock out on guitar (nice touch with ghostbusters sticker) in his hobbies section, second last is swinging past home to check mail that pops up a contact form and finally ends with beaming up back into the UFO with ending film credits. I’m not even going to attempt to talk about the attention to detail. Exceptional effort.

Brand-On Johns-On (Personal, Résumé)

Brand-On Johns-On

Responsive One Page website for planetary scientist and MIT postdoctoral scholar, ‘Brandon Johnson’. There is so much love in this page and despite the awesome elements, my favorite part is definitely the “ON” branding that is just perfectly consistent throughout the site. “Brand-on” claims he is always on so there is even an Off switch that brings up a hilarious error message saying “Action could not be completed, Brandon is always on”. A unique website in a niche industry and well executed.
