What happened to all my traffic from One Page Love?

tl;dr – Since we integrated our SSL certificate on 05 January 2015, all referral traffic from onepagelove.com to your featured website would have not reflected in Google Analytics or statistics tracker. The visitors still browsed your website but their activity was untracked. From today everything is back to normal.

Discovery

The investigation kicked off when I featured my Italian friend’s unique personal one pager and he reported back there was no traffic increase in his Google Analytics.

We did dozens of tests and confirmed all traffic from onepagelove.com was untracked. This also traced back to 05 January 2015, the day we installed our SSL certificate and http://onepagelove.com moved to https://onepagelove.com.

After further investigation along with great support from our hosting company, WP Engine, we pin-pointed the issue:

All referral data is being stripped when going from an HTTPS site to an HTTP site. – something I was completely unaware of.

Solution

We found on a comprehensive article on Smerity and we just needed to add this meta tag to the website head:

<meta name="referrer" content="always" />

Apologies

All I can say is this is a hard lesson I’ve learnt and I’m sorry for the mistake. OPL now get over 10k visitors a day and we take pride in guaranteeing you a solid spike of traffic when we feature your website.

In closing, three things are certain:

  1. The visitors did arrive at your website
  2. Your One Pager is still in our browsable and searchable archives forever
  3. All future referrals from onepagelove.com to your website will be tracked
