AV-TEST Unveils the Antivirus Software and the Windows PC Olympics

But don't believe Malwarebytes is the only antivirus circus in town. Others, including heavyweight contenders such as Defender, Kaspersky, and Norton, had their own peculiarities and flaws. For example, Kaspersky determined that "launching popular websites" was its Achilles' heel, obtaining a mediocre 20% in both May and June. The industry average is 14% chuckles.

Now, let's talk about Microsoft Defender, the knight in shining armor for many Windows users. It chose to have a moment of Jekyll and Hyde. While it excelled in the "launch of standard software applications" category, it stumbled and crashed in the "installation of frequently-used applications." It was at a discouraging 17% in May 2023; by June, it had worsened to 21%. In comparison, the industry average is 14%. Norton, another heavyweight contender, followed a similar pattern, polling 24% in May and 20% in June. It's like seeing a professional performer stumble through their lines during a live performance.

These Are Top 10 Social Media Platform by Traffic and Time Spent

The battle for the attention of users has reached a fever pitch as of late, with most tech companies trying to do whatever they can to get the biggest slice of the pie. In order to shed some light on which companies and sites are commanding the most devotion from users around the world, we've crunched some numbers based on SimilarWeb data that highlights social media platforms' monthly web traffic as well as how much screen time they get every month.

With all of that having been said and now out of the way, it is important to note that YouTube was the winner by a large margin. The Google owned video streaming and social media platform received about 34 billion visits in the span of a single month. Furthermore, each visit lasted over 20 minutes on average which amounts to thousands of years of screentime on a monthly basis.

One thing that bears mentioning is that YouTube is beating every site at each metric that was taken into consideration. It received more site visits than Facebook, WhatsApp, X (formerly known as Twitter) and Instagram combined, with each of these sites forming the rest of the top five list with all things having been considered and taken into account.

Facebook came in second with 17.4 billion site visits in a month, but it only got half as much screentime per user as YouTube or 10.34 minutes per session to be precise compared to YouTube’s 20.23 minutes per visit.

Meanwhile, Meta’s domination of the charts is hard to ignore since apart from Facebook, Instagram was yet another inclusion into this list. Apart from YouTube and X, all of the entries in the top five belong to Meta, which just goes to show how much control this company has over the world of social media in general.

Instagram managed to hit an impressive 6.8 billion monthly visits, slightly more than X. However, its average visit duration sat at just 8.14 minutes, which indicates that it is not doing enough to keep users hooked for long enough which is leading to poorer numbers than might have been the case otherwise.

Twitter, which has now been rebranded as X, managed to reach 4th place with 6.5 billion monthly visits. It received marginally higher durations of retention per visit, coming up to 10.43 minutes for each session.

WhatsApp came in 5th in terms of total number of visitors on the app each month. It receives 3 billion monthly visits, less than half that of X, but in spite of the fact that this is the case its average visit duration of 18.52 minutes was more than enough to compensate for the shortfall and secured its position in fourth place.

Once we exit the top five list, other social media platforms start to see the light of day, although none of them come anywhere close to the 3 billion user per month mark, like all the higher ranking ones. TikTok gets 2.3 billion visitors per month with only 3.8 minutes of attention by average users. Reddit’s 1.8 billion monthly visitors averaging at 8 minutes and 39 seconds per session. LinkedIn reached 1.7 billion visits, while both Twitch and Pinterest boast 1.1 billion visits.

2023 is widely being touted as the year of AI, and there are several apps out there that have managed to incorporate AI functionality to one extent or another. With all of that having been said and now out of the way, it is important to note that Picsart is one of the most popular apps of all, at least as far as AI functionality is concerned. Not only did this app receive the highest number of downloads in the first half of 2023, but it also attained the highest number of monthly active users. Furthermore, Picsart managed to reach second place in terms of revenue.

In spite of the fact that this is the case, Facetune was able to surpass Picsart’s revenue to reach the top spot. Both of these apps offer video and photo editing to users, thereby confirming that such apps are seeing more popularity than might have been the case otherwise.

Another AI based photo enhancer that has been picking up a lot of steam is Remini. It received the second highest number of downloads of any app that offers some degree of AI functionality, with the third highest amount of revenue after Facetune and Picsart along with the fourth highest number of monthly active users.

Interestingly, Microsoft Edge has also been seeing a tremendous level of success with all things having been considered and taken into account. This app reached ninth place in monthly active users, fifth place in total downloads and also got the tenth highest amount of revenue.

56% of iOS Users Adopt Apple Focus and Live Activities to Improve Digital Wellbeing

The presence of smartphones has begun to permeate into every single aspect of our day to day lives, but this has also made it increasingly important to focus on digital wellbeing. Apple has been at the forefront of creating features that can allow users to utilize its advanced technology much more healthily than might have been the case otherwise, with the Focus and Live Activities settings standing out as particularly beneficial examples on this front.

It turns out that 56% of people that use Apple products have already begun to incorporate these digital wellbeing features into their activities. In spite of the fact that this is the case, 42% of survey respondents that said that they don’t use Focus claim that they aren’t even aware of its existence. This seems to suggest that Apple should put more effort about educating users about how they can make their smartphone usage less of a health risk with all things having been considered and taken into account.

Live Activities have also seen a high rate of adoption. With all of that having been said and now out of the way, it is important to note that 41% of users have started using it, with around 24% saying that they didn’t know it was an option that they could avail. Furthermore, 62% of Live Activities users went so far as to say that their experiences were largely positive, which indicates that Apple is helping its consumers get more value out of their purchases without running the risk of smartphone addiction and the like.

Based on the findings in a recent survey, 31% of users that avail these digital wellbeing features do so because of the fact that this is the sort of thing that could potentially end up making their lives simpler in the long run. 35% said that the features are easy enough that they can be used intuitively, and it will be interesting to see if other smartphone manufacturers try to take a leaf out of Apple’s book in order to cater to a wider subset of consumers.
