Elon Musk has made a lot of big changes after taking control of Twitter, including laying off approximately half of the people that had previously been employed by the social media platform. He claimed that this would help make Twitter more efficient, but in spite of the fact that this is the case many are suggesting that his changes are having a negative impact on the platform.
Twitter is unique in that it is used for network building as well as promotional awareness, and some of the biggest accounts on the platform are really hating what Elon Musk has been up to. With all of that having been said and now out of the way, it is important to note that these large accounts have been noting quite a few technical issues, and it’s hard to imagine that Musk laying off thousands of workers didn’t cause this.
The owner of the popular Twitter account Best of Nextdoor is just one of the many influencers who is annoyed by what’s been happening. Her account had reached 55,000 followers, but she recently lost around 13,000 followers after Musk took the helm.
Musk recently said that he will be cracking down on bots which would result in a lot of people losing followers, but such a massive drop is unlikely to be caused by limiting bot traffic. Continuing with the story of Best of Nextdoor, the owner of the account noticed that she lost around 400 followers as soon as Musk revealed his acquisition had gone through.
Many had been suspecting that there would be a mass exodus from Twitter after Musk purchased it. Downloads for the app have already fallen by 16% month over month, and a 3% decrease year over year has also been noted.
It’s still too early to say whether or not Musk is ruining Twitter with any degree of confidence. However, Twitter users, especially the more prominent ones, clearly aren’t happy with how he’s running things. We’ll have to wait and see if Musk is able to turn this sinking ship around or if he brings Twitter down with him.
