Meta Tries to Topple Twitter With Its New Barcelona App

Twitter’s acquisition by Elon Musk created a furore among users of the social media platform, leading to a mass exodus of many users to alternative sites. In spite of the fact that this is the case, many of these users ended up returning since Twitter alternatives like Mastodon and others simply didn’t live up to the platform everyone knew and loved. Despite Twitter holding on to many users, the company has been struggling to stay afloat with its CEO sparking controversy after controversy.

With all of that having been said and now out of the way, it is important to note that Meta is trying to take Twitter down with a brand new text based social media app. The name of this app is Barcelona, and it is currently being pitched as a text based version of Instagram. Coming up with a Twitter clone is a smart move by Meta because of the fact that this is the sort of thing that could potentially end up allowing to capture some Twitter exiles.

Based on the information that is currently shared by app researcher Alessandro Paluzzi, it appears that Barcelona will require you to have an Instagram account to log in. A character limit will also be imposed on posts, although it will be a relatively generous 500 characters with all things having been considered and taken into account.

Another aspect of Meta’s sales pitch for this app is that it will be decentralized. There is no context to help understand what the company means by this label, but decentralization is a highly popular buzzword that may help make Barcelona more popular than might have been the case otherwise.

One thing worth mentioning here is that this app might be a spinoff of a recently introduced Instagram feature called Channels. The purpose of Channels is to allow creators to send out text based posts without having to add any images. The connection between this feature and the upcoming app remains to be seen, and there is currently no word about when it might be launched. It will be interesting to see how this will change Twitter’s current trajectory.
