One of the biggest changes that WhatsApp has made these past few years has to do with expanding beyond the smartphone landscape. Users can now open up WhatsApp on their laptops as well as various other devices, but in spite of the fact that this is the case the process for doing so can be quite tricky. Users would need to authenticate the device by scanning a barcode, and this can reduce the efficacy of opening up WhatsApp on an assortment of devices to stay connected.
With all of that having been said and now out of the way, it is important to note that WhatsApp has finally announced the long awaited rollout of its companion mode. This will keep the barcode scanning feature because of the fact that this is the sort of thing that could potentially end up making users more secure, but it will also greatly expand the capabilities of multi-device compatibility.
WhatsApp users can now use the instant messaging app on a secondary phone. While it might not have the same capabilities as the primary device, using a secondary device in companion mode will still allow users to see their chat history and interact with their contacts with all things having been considered and taken into account.
Many users have long been requesting a feature that allows them to use the same WhatsApp account on various different devices. This rollout is a definite step in the right direction. It is currently only available to beta testers on Android, but a far larger number have been given access to the update. In order to use companion mode, you will need to ensure that you have the latest update for the WhatsApp beta downloaded on all devices.
As many as four devices can be linked with this new companion mode, and it will be interesting to see how WhatsApp expands on this feature in the future. It is clearly a highly desired upgrade, and any further changes will only serve to improve the user experience. However, it is currently unknown when this update will make its way to iOS users.
