Ask the UXperts: The UX of Onboarding — with Dr Paul Sherman

What exactly is onboarding and why is it so important?

Onboarding is the process of getting people to adopt your application or service – in short, to use the thing you’ve made.

We all go through an onboarding process of some description on a regular basis, and according to Dr Sherman, getting it right is quite literally a matter of survival (for your product).

In this session, we’ll explore some common patterns and break them down to figure out what works and what doesn’t. We’ll look at some of the key principles of successful onboarding, and learn what to avoid.

If you want your product or service (or that of your employer) to survive, then this session is not one to be missed.

The Details

Meet Dr Sherman

Dr Paul Sherman

Dr. Paul Sherman has worked in user experience since the days of dial-up.

He conducts user research and user experience design for mobile, web and desktop in many domains, including accounting; banking; e-commerce; financial planning and portfolio management; healthcare; mobile gaming; mobile device hardware and software; network, server and cloud application security; tax preparation; and travel, among others.

He also creates and teaches graduate courses in user experience research and design at Kent State University, where is he is an Assistant Professor and Program Coordinator for the User Experience Design Master’s program.

How to Ask Your Questions

If you can’t make the live session but have questions, we’d love to collect them ahead of time and we’ll ask Paul on your behalf. You can ask them in the comments below. We’ll publish the responses (along with the full transcript) in the days following the session.

Here are a few question ideas to get you started:

  1. What are some of the common mistakes or misconceptions when it comes to onboarding?

  2. Is there a critical time period in which users need to complete the onboarding process if it is to succeed?

  3. What are some examples of products or brands that have got this right?

How does Ask the UXperts work?

These sessions run for approximately an hour and best of all, they don’t cost a cent. We use a dedicated public Slack channel. That means that there is no audio or video, but a full transcript will be posted up on here in the days following the session.

7 Quick Tips for Redesigning Your Company Logo

When it comes to redesigning logos, graphic designers tend to take one of two views. Some think logo redesigns are easy because the logo already exists—everything's there, so they barely make any changes to it. Others think logo redesigns are a great time to toss the old design out like dirty...
